Under normal conditions, I would never review a restaurant during the first week of operations. However, this is not “normal conditions” and people have been waiting for the Pop Pie Co. restaurant to open ever since it was announced that they were going into the old “Nati’s” building. (Obviously that did not work out.)

The Pop Pie Co. has been in Hillcrest for a long time, and since this is an adjunct of that restaurant, using the same menu and recipes, I decided to do a soft review to go with their soft opening. And yes, they are open now. I also want to be a little more clear about their location. They are on the corner of Catalina and Voltaire, next door to Cesarina’s and inside the storefront that stayed vacant for years after the coffee house moved out. Just down the street is another restaurant “Peace Pies” which is an entirely different restaurant.

A Sad Day in OB

Several years ago – December, 2016 to be exact, I wrote an article for the OB Rag about one of my favorite restaurants closing – but opening up with the same name and same menu as the original one. That restaurant was Rancho’s– and it would be reopening as Hugo’s Cocina. Many of you remember Hugo – he had been a waiter at Rancho’s for many years, and he was delightful.

Every now and then you go to a merchant in your neighborhood and you are treated like royalty. That doesn’t happen too often but when it does you almost would like to shout about it from the roof top of the closest building. I had one of those experiences today and want to share it with you.

Back in mid-December around the time of my friend Steve’s birthday, the restaurant I wanted to take him to had no tables available for the time we needed. I had been to Cocina de Barrio with three others a couple months earlier, but it was for lunch, and because that menu was very different than most Mexican restaurants, I was curious as to what their dinner menu might be like. There was no problem getting reservations and I did call the restaurant directly.

In beginning this blog I want to point out that this is MY opinion. There is too much going on to have to defend myself to those of you that will disagree with me. You already know that I am an “anti-trumpster” and January 6th, 2001 did nothing to change that; rather it only reinforced my beliefs about the evilness of this man. With that in mind……

I am not a television fanatic. With the exception of MSNBC, local news daily, and an occasional “Jeopardy” I seldom have the television on. After the Chargers left San Diego my interest in football stopped; I have never been a Padres fan, and I do not like to watch movies or sitcoms on the tube.

So when I began watching the news on January 6th, 2001, I wondered why a movie about the Civil War was being shown?

As I look back over this past year, I am so dissatisfied with my lack of accomplishments. In the past I have written books, been active in many organizations, attended classes, etc. This year I didn’t write a book, and with only the brief thought of beginning cookbook #4, I let that thought pass. But there are some things that I am thankful for.

I have a new grandchild – number 19 – and she’s adorable. My grandson graduated college with his B.A, and was hired at his first choice here in San Diego.

I met a person that has relieved the loneliness and depression I have suffered from for the past twelve years. I do not have any of the after effects from COVID, and I have had all three shots so if I should be exposed again my case will be milder than if I hadn’t had the injections.

One of my favorite Mexican restaurants in Ocean Beach was Nati’s. I think that when they closed down almost the entire town was unhappy and many experiences there just became old memories. I was happy to see that another Mexican restaurant – La Doña – was going in to the same place, and hoped that new memories would be established there.

The other day was the day that four older ladies decided it was a perfect time to visit the new restaurant. Although it has been open for some time, we thought it was important to give it a chance to establish its own persona.

Now that many restaurants are open with the restriction for Covid being eased, it is time for me to try some of the places people have told me about over the year. The Coffee Hub and Café was one that I wanted to try.

It is located in the small shopping center on the corner of Scott and Shelter Island Drive, that also houses another restaurant I reviewed some time ago – Supanee House of Thai – and across the street from Miguel’s. They are open for breakfast and lunch, and although Google has them closed on the weekdays, that is not correct. They are definitely open.

In order to celebrate Meredith’s new position, we decided to go to lunch at the Pt. Loma Fish Shop and both of us were happy that was our choice, for selections were tasty, hot, and good.

Many of you have said in the past that I am too negative; that I must be very unhappy to be able to find so many “wrong” things in the world. I wouldn’t want to disappoint you, so I have decided to add to my negativity to keep you happy.

For those of you that might share my unhappiness – I want to tell you that I am happier than I have been in a long time; people are remarking on how well I look which is nice to hear about this old lady since I just became a grandmother for the 19th time with the 20th due in a few weeks! So without further wait here it is:

I just spent a hilarious (albeit dangerous) ten minutes watching people try to navigate the new round-about in Ocean Beach.

Over a decade ago there were four younger ladies that were members of the Peninsula YMCA. They attended the Water Aerobics classes daily and became friends. However, as time passed, these four ladies went separate ways, and although kept in touch on Face Book, only met together one time in the past 12 years. The ladies left it up to me to decide where to go for lunch, and since Cocina de Barrio was relatively new and none of us had eaten there before it seemed like a good choice – and it was.

It’s been a long time since I have gone to an ice hockey game.

Years ago, when my husband was alive we would attend the games, but I can honestly say that in the past twelve years I have not attended a game. Until yesterday, when my friend Steve asked me if I wanted to go with him for the season’s opener. Of course I said ‘yes’ since I have always liked sports – used to take ice skating lessons at the Pan Pacific Auditorium in Los Angeles, with the hope, short lived, of joining the Ice caspades.

When Steve asked me to go to the game, I didn’t realize that he had second row seats behind the goal; that every time a puck would hit the wall or glass in front of us it sounded like a gun being shot off. And it sounded like a zillion of them were going off at one time. It was fun watching the woman in front of me jump and spill her drink almost throughout the entire first quarter when those pucks hit the wall. It is interesting to note that she did not come back after the first period intermission – or if she did she sat somewhere else!
