In the past several weeks, I have been asked my no fewer than 4 people if I have tried the “O.B. Fisher’s”. I had not, but when Riccardo, my student from Italy told me he had a great fish taco there I decided it was time to try it out. After all, it is only steps from my house, and I have been to the “Pt. Loma Beach Café” for smoothies, so I called my neighbor Jim and asked him to try it out with me. (The Pt. Loma Beach Café is open in the mornings and early afternoon; the “OB Fisher’s” opens at 4:00pm in the same location.)

It is not often that I am invited out to lunch to a place as beautiful – and costly – as the Kona Kai Resort. I think it has been at least 30 years since I was here last, and although the Resort has recently been remodeled and reopened on July 4th of this year, it is still breathtakingly beautiful. And, surprisingly, it was not as expensive as I remembered it being.

Denise and I decided to eat outdoors facing the San Diego Bay and the swimming pool. At the time of our arrival at 12:45pm, we were the only ones in the restaurant; however when we left there were three other parties finishing up their meal.

We were greeted by Sean, the manager, and he was delightful. Apparently he is a new father and told us that he had an opportunity to have lunch today because the “baby gave him some free time.” He showed us to our table where Jesus immediately appeared asking for our drink order.

The first time I googled “Hair of the Dog” I was taken to a lovely looking bar in Portland, Oregon that had a fascinating menu. Somehow, though, I did not think that they were also dog groomers, and I had to do a little more research. Perhaps you will be as surprised as I was to find that there is a dog groomer only 3 stores away from the cleaners on Sunset Cliffs and Narragansett. (There is the cleaners; then a house – I didn’t even know there was a house there and my daughter told me that one of her childhood friends used to live there.) Next to the house is an accountant’s office, and next to that office is Robin’s “Hair of the Dog” grooming place. And … she has been there 20 years! Who knew?

I have tried to stay out of the Filner controversy since it started. After all, I was – am – a supporter of his. I have a picture of him with me on my front window, and have cheered him on as he tackles the “good old boys” from yesteryear. To say that I am appalled at the events that have taken place recently is a mild rejoinder. The betrayal that I have felt towards the mayor is pure and simple anger. How could he? He won the election by setting up goals and principles that he is fighting for now.

When Donna Frye gave her first press conference I felt nauseated for hours afterwards. I worked on Donna’s campaign; I respect her more than any other politician I have ever met. And then came her second press conference and I wondered what happened to her. The yelling is so out of character. I was sorry to see her lose her composure.

Editor: Just recently, the VA announced that a new director will be taking over the Ft Rosecrans – and Miramar – cemeteries in mid-August. Douglas Ledbetter, an Air Force vet and former director of the national cemeteries in Illinois and Nebraska (more on Ledbetter at the end of this post). Apparently, the Ft Rosecrans cemetery has been a revolving door for short-time directors over the years. Peter Young – the former director – was on board less than a year. And the director before him served only one year.

We don’t know if this is due to the Widder Curry taking on this issue of the conditions at the Ft. Rosecrans Cemetery or not, but here is here latest report of her most visit.

After celebrating one of the widows of my support group birthday, we thought it would be nice to drive up to Ft. Rosecrans to visit our husbands and see what, if any progress, was being made at the cemetery.

Since August of 2012, I have been writing articles about the deplorable condition of the cemetery. Last month Turko (KUSI) did a report on the cemetery and, although it was pointing out how long it has taken for anything constructive to be accomplished, he felt that a “turn around” was taking place. Maybe. And maybe not.

Since I appeared briefly on the program – I thought that maybe getting Turko involved really would make a difference. The footage that was aired – Memorial Day, for example – was not the current conditions of the cemetery. Today was worse.

A few weeks ago I received an invitation to join “Nextdoor” by a friend that lives on Rosecrans in the 92106 zip code. Since she lives several miles from me I ignored her request, but in the mail yesterday I received another invitation to join “Nextdoor – Sunset Cliffs.”

I was now intrigued to find out what this group was all about and did some checking, only to find it was similar to a “Neighborhood Watch Group” but more specific to the area in which I live. It was referred to as “a private neighborhood website”. It went on to say that “Nextdoor helps you to get to know your neighbors; share local recommendations and advice; lend, borrow and give away; keep your neighborhood safe and stay informed.” It sounded like something I might be interested in and so I joined. I was pleased to see that some of the information comes directly from the Police Department.

“Doesn’t Anyone Use REAL Ham Anymore?”

Years ago our family patronized this restaurant site when it was the Boll Weevil. It was a favorite of ours, not because of the décor but because of the hamburgers and accompanying condiments on the table. After it closed down, we had several meals at the “Point Break” but it looked rather dingy to us and we were told that it was going to be remodeled. I have not been back for at least 4 years, but I heard that the Pt. Loma Democrats go there after their monthly Sunday meetings. Now that I have renewed my membership in the club I decided if it was good enough for them, it must be good enough for me. I asked my neighbor Jim and his friend Marilyn to join me and they were eager to try it out.

It could have been an omen, but when we walked in and seated ourselves, we were in front of one of the many televisions in the small restaurant. And you will never guess what channel was playing: Yep, FOX News. I sat with my back to it but both Jim and Marilyn got to watch it, even if they didn’t want to.

“Country Waffles” was a restaurant that my husband and I used to frequent often. I had not been back since he passed away, almost 4 years ago, so when Marilyn told me she would go grocery shopping with me and help me push the shopping cart – as I have a broken shoulder, I suggested breakfast also. I knew that she liked the “Country Waffles” and I figured I could go back there without any “pangs” as I frequently do when I go to a favorite place alone for the first time. It was interesting to see that nothing had changed; even the wait staff was the same.

They have a very extensive menu, which includes breakfast and lunch. They are not open for dinner. Besides the waffle selection, they have a skillet/scrambles section; a country breakfast; omelets; pancakes and crepes; Benedicts; hamburgers and sandwiches, etc. The prices range from $6.99 for their specials to $9.25 for a “Butcher Block Burger.”

For the first time in many years, I had the opportunity to baby-sit two of my grandchildren. Actually, these were two of my four great-grandchildren, and, after swimming all day the first day they stayed with me, I realized we would have to do something else or all of us would go nuts in the remaining five days.

Thanks to a great friend, I was given complimentary passes for three to SeaWorld and, in spite of my broken shoulder, decided to drive the short distance instead of taking a bus or taxi. The tickets also included the $15 parking fee.

We parked near the entrance – or what I thought was the entrance – only to find that there was a lot of construction going on and the entrance had been moved about an eighth of a mile from where we parked. (If you have ever had a broken shoulder you know that each step jiggles the two broken bones, and you keep feeling your shoulder to see if the bones are sticking out yet.)

The letter I received told me to pick up my passes at the “Will Call” but… there was no “will call.” I asked the guide where we should go to pick them up and he looked at the huge line where “ordinary” people were picking up their tickets and said “at the end of this line.”

In the past few years, I have found that I do a lot of purchasing from online companies. Lured by free shipping and no tax, I figure I have saved a bundle of money during these purchasing frenzies.

In the past year or so, I have stepped away from Amazon.com and started buying items that are specifically designed to be used in San Diego. And have I been burned – at least initially.

Several months ago I purchased from “Deals For The Cure” some bottles of Raspberry Ketone. This was highly touted on “Dr. Oz” and I had tried it for 3 months. I didn’t notice any loss of “belly fat” as was advertised but I felt a little more energy when taking it. I am down to the last few capsules and that is why I made the purchase.

Michael Turko of KUSI News did a story a week or so ago and I sent him the articles that I wrote. One of the real discrepancies in his report and mine was that he was told the problem began occurring in November of 2012. My first article was written in August, 2012 and it was already a problem.

My dog Buddy and I were awakened early Sunday morning by the smoke alarm going off in our bedroom. (Yes, Buddy and I sleep in the same room – although not in the same bed.) He freaked out because the high pitched noise hurts his ears, and he quickly ran into the other part of the house to hide.
