Local Artists Associated with San Diego Museum of Art Sponsoring Exhibition
A group of local artists associated with the San Diego Museum of Art are sponsoring an exhibit in downtown Ocean Beach starting Tuesday, November 3rd. The exhibition entitled Takeover: Small-Scale Works will consist of fifty-five paintings, sculptures, photographs, prints, and mixed-media works by forty artists, none of which are larger than 16 inches in any direction.
This is all happening at SHIFT Gallery at 4847 Newport Avenue (across the street from Target) by the San Diego Museum of Art Artists Guild. Barbara Sexton, nationally known artist and retired Mesa College art professor, selected the art from 221 entries in a juried competition.
Takeover will run November 3 through November 17 at SHIFT Gallery. SHIFT is open seven days a week from noon to six p.m. and by appointment. The public is invited to meet participating artists at a gallery reception on Thursday, November 5, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Be aware that the gallery is not visible from the street, but is accessed through a nearly hidden “speakeasy-style” entrance—a narrow passageway inside Connect San Diego, a retail store.
The following is from a press release:
The Guild, established in 1915 by a group of prominent San Diegans seeking to enhance the cultural profile of San Diego County, is the region’s oldest and most prestigious organization of professional visual artists. It played a vital role in founding the Fine Arts Gallery of San Diego (now The San Diego Museum of Art), which opened in 1926. With 130 members throughout the United States, the Guild sponsors yearly exhibitions and educational programs, while serving as the Museum’s largest and most active support council.
SHIFT Gallery is an advanced exhibition and events space reminiscent of contemporary venues in Los Angeles and New York. Established in 2024 by Robert Blume as an adjunct to the original North Park location, SHIFT showcases emerging and established creatives in visual art, performance, fashion, and other areas.Thought-provoking, cutting-edge programming and a major social media presence have brought SHIFT major recognition as a local cultural phenomenon and destination point.
The gallery, not visible from the street, is accessed through a nearly hidden “speakeasy-style” entrance—a narrow passageway inside Connect San Diego, Blume’s retail store specializing in custom art apparel and accessories.
More information and reproduction-quality images of works in the exhibition will be provided on request by Guild board member Mark-Elliott Lugo, who can be reached at (619) 993-3339 or lugomarkl 2@gmail.com.
