Anti-STVR Stickers Popping Up on Sidewalks in North OB

Informational stickers appearing in front of OB short term rentals

By Joaquin Antique

This reporter recently returned from an extended vacation outside of the bubble to find anti-STVR stickers popping up on sidewalks all over north OB. The numbers of these stickers on almost every street I’ve walked on since I got back to OB is mind blowing.

Kudos to the guerilla artist(s) who are informing the public of the awful impact that greedy property owners are imposing on OB!

  1. Also noted one in North Park yesterday on the sidewalk in front of any STVR that is no longer displaying their city-required sign.

  2. Some residents are becoming increasingly frustrated. The terms, the caps, were never voted on by the residents of the City. The terms were effectively dictated by Expedia and Bridgette Browning, who was president of the hotel workers union. It was strongly supported by the real estate industry who saw opportunities to jack up housing rents and prices across the City. And then Campbell was to hold a review after a year or so, but quashed any real discussions. An open review likely would have replaced the host approach with one beneficial owner. The City of San Diego Short Term Rentals Alliance law suit against the City to eliminate CAPS that ended in a colossal failure opens the door not only to go to one beneficial owner, but to further decrease the cap limits in Mission Beach from 30 to a more reasonable percentage. It is also time that the City stopped removing refuse at short term rentals.

  3. Glad to see this. As a fifteen year renter, now displaced to back East from OB, I still mourn my former home, friends, ocean, coffee shop.
Some days, it all feels like a dream that I was there.
