Back in the late Sixties in San Diego, there was only 3 local TV stations and TV 8 (the future CBS8) was one of them. And one of their best reporters was Harold Keen – who later wrote for San Diego Magazine during its hey-day.
In this video from the past, 1969, Keen does a story on OB’s Inbetween, a youth drop-in center on Newport Avenue.

I worked at the Inbetween part-time for a year, I believe, in 1973. Counselor- janitor, you name it, I did it.
I recall very clearly one day, I was making a stew for the kids in the main room, when 2 cops walked into the crowded area, and slowly strolled through — and meanwhile, Nixon was on our black and white telling us, “I am not a crook.”
Thanks so much for posting this, Frank. So interesting and fun to see what OB was like — at least this aspect of it — in 1969, when I was 16, living in SF, and two years before I came here to attend SDSU.
I just wish the video had chyrons identifying the speakers.
Hi Paul–I’m the CBS 8 archivist who posted this. I reached out to the OB Rag about it. I wish we had chyrons too. We have scripts for all stories that aired in newscasts but so far, I have been unable to find scripts for special reports.
thx much barb. these are great! thx for sharing.
You’re welcome. I just posted 1971 film of the Love Library dedication. Check out the News 8 Throwback playlist for lots of vintage goodies including OB and SDSU.
Yes, a very fascinating time capsule from 1969 in OB. Thx for sharing.
