Community Coalition Bulletin: This Week at City Hall Feb. 2 — Feb. 6

The San Diego Community Coalition publishes this email bulletin to keep our members and the public informed about important Council and Planning Commission hearings and other city public meetings.

Monday, February 2: City Council, 2:00 p.m.

Agenda

Item CS-1: Ordinance Approving Contract with NEOGOV for Applicant Recruitment, Tracking, and Hiring

Why it matters: NEOGOV would be paid nearly $4.2 million over 10 years for HR software systems. That seems like a lot for a city that 1) has a personnel department responsible for recruitment, tracking, and hiring; 2) is supposed to be in the middle of a hiring freeze; and 3) is nearly insolvent.

Wednesday, February 4: Budget and Government Efficiency Committee, 9:00 a.m.

Agenda

Item 4: FY 2027 Updated City Council Budget Priorities

Why it matters: This item includes a report from the Independent Budget Analyst that warns about a projected $105.2 million revenue shortfall. Much of the report focuses on how “City services for 2027 will need to be reduced.” Then, near the end, there is a quick mention of a possible “evaluation of managerial and unclassified positions.”

Thursday, February 5: Homeowners Focus Group: “Neighborhoods for All of Us”

Time and Place: 1:45-2:45 p.m., City Heights/ Weingart Library, 3795 Fairmount Ave

Mayor Todd Gloria’s newest effort to upzone neighborhoods and increase density will be the topic of this forum. People who are interested should email city planner Angela Dang at avdang@sandiego.gov by Wednesday, February 4, at 12 noon.

It isn’t clear if this is “invitation only” or open to the public. Based on reports about previous forums, much of the time will be spent in staff presentations about the program.

It’s hard to tell if the public will have time to give substantial input about density impacts and infrastructure needs. But if enough people express interest, perhaps the city will offer more opportunities for vigorous community dialogue about housing.

  1. Thanks, Frank. I should’ve mentioned that I saw they have a Facebook page when I did my online search. I don’t consider Facebook (or X, for that matter) to be public websites, though, and many people (me included) won’t have anything to do with either of those particular services. I think people can set their Facebook accounts to be publicly viewable by people without accounts, but from what I’ve been able to make out, just sample posts are displayed, not entire timelines.

  2. George, if you’d like to get on the Coalition’s email list, write to me at kate@katecallen.com. We send “This Week at City Hall” to Coalition members Sunday morning, then Frank posts it in the Rag Monday morning.

  3. Let’s destroy housing stock with ADU’s and now basically build HOA condos. What a goof Toad. Anyone seen any available “high demand” land near transit other than the Midway area?

Neighborhood Homes for All of Us is a City of San Diego initiative aimed at creating more affordable homeownership opportunities by allowing smaller-scale, dense development—such as rowhomes and townhomes—in residential areas. This community-driven plan tackles the housing crisis by increasing options for families and encouraging development near transit.
    Key Details of the Initiative
Focus: Increases housing density through smaller-scale, “missing middle” housing options like townhomes and duplexes.
Location: Targets neighborhoods, particularly those with high demand.
Purpose: Promotes homeownership and reduces displacement.
Components: Part of a broader package that includes the Housing Action Package, the Middle-Income Housing Working Group, and Blueprint San Diego.
This initiative is part of Mayor Todd Gloria’s broader strategy to build more,, accessible homes.

  4. Update on the “Neighborhoods” focus group: It’s invitation only. More information from the city: “The summaries will be posted to the Neighborhood Homes for All of Us webpage once all of the focus groups have been completed. We anticipate that will be spring of this year. There is also an email sign-up form on the bottom of the Neighborhood Homes webpage to receive updates on upcoming and future engagement opportunities.”

  5. Thank you Frank and Kate for posting the weekly city council agenda in advance. You’d hope that this would be standard fare in all of the publications in the County, but I digress. It is very much appreciated.

It would be awesome if we could turn to the OB Rag for the weekly State and County agendas. It can only make for a more well informed California Public.

What we do not know continues to burn us all. The politico-corporate machination of all of City, County and State agendas that have been able to work against all Californians in the absence of meaningful coverage from any sources other than that of the vociferous independent free press. So thank you OB Rag
