On Tuesday this week, the Rag reported on yet another pedestrian death in the Midway District.
An unidentified male pedestrian was killed late Friday night, Nov. 14, when he ran across a street in the Midway District and was struck by a SUV. …The man was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Yes, the unfortunate pedestrian had run across the street against his light just before he was struck. He dearly paid for his mistake.
When we reported on the story, I cynically added:
So many pedestrians have been injured or killed in the Midway District over the last few years, there ought to be a chapter in the Book of Dead just on the Midway.
After publishing this, I got to thinking, that ‘yes, it does seem like there’s been a rash of pedestrian deaths and injuries from cars in the Midway of late.’ So I set out to investigate and rifled through OB Rag files and postings. The tragic following is what I found:
November 2025
The death listed above.
August 2025
Pedestrian Received Life-Threatening Injuries After Being Struck by Vehicle Early August 3, 2025 in Midway District
May 2025
A 51-year-old male pedestrian died Saturday, May 10, 2025, after being struck by a car in the Midway District. The as-yet-to-be identified man was crossing the street outside of a crosswalk in the 3400 block of Sports Arena Boulevard.
Earlier recent years showed this:

March 2022
Late Sunday night, March 20, a 61-year-old woman was killed after being struck by a car in the 3800 block of Rosecrans Street in the Midway District. About 10:10 pm. She was hit by a 53-year-old male driver in an unspecified vehicle who was traveling southbound on Rosecrans.
Going back a few more years, these were uncovered:
January 2020
A custodian at Silver Gate Elementary in Point Loma, Sharon Wood, was seriously injured in a hit-and-run incident as she and two others were crossing Sports Arena Boulevard after a Gulls game at Pechanga Arena on January 3, 2020. A short time later, a suspect was arrested on suspicion of felony hit-and-run and DUI drugs.
All three injured pedestrians were taken to a hospital. Besides Wood, a 55-year-old woman suffered fractures to her face and a brain bleed and a 54-year-old man suffered a minor leg injury and cuts to his hands. Ms. Wood will be in a wheelchair for about eight weeks and will miss about four months of work at the school. She will need physical therapy to be able to walk again.
Feb 2020
A 57-year-old man suffered severe injuries when he was struck by a car in a Home Depot parking lot in the Midway District. It happened around 4:05 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 5 at the home improvement store off Sports Arena Boulevard and Kemper Street. A 57-year-old man was walking on the sidewalk adjacent to the store when he was struck by an 80-year-old man driving a 2015 Toyota Prius westbound through the parking lot.
There’s been other injuries caused by various interactions between vehicles.
September 2019
74-year-old male was traveling eastbound in the 4400 block of West Point Loma Boulevard on a motorcycle about 1 p.m. on Sept. 4. A white SUV was stopped in traffic in front of the motorcycle. The motorcycle rider became distracted and crashed into the back of the SUV. The motorcycle rider sustained a fractured pelvis and internal injuries. His injuries are not life threatening and alcohol was not a factor.
August 2019
A 38-year-old man suffered life threatening injuries Friday night – August 30 – after being struck by a vehicle about midnight in the Midway District. The man was either walking or running when a vehicle driving westbound on Sports Arena Boulevard near East Drive hit him, police said. The pedestrian sustained major head trauma.
That same day, a bicyclist and Jeep collided on Midway Drive – A bicyclist riding in the Midway District Friday afternoon – August 30 – was struck by a Jeep as it was leaving a parking lot..
March 2019
A man riding a scooter suffered a fracture to his leg when he was broadsided by a motorist in the Midway on March 2. The 46-year-old man was transported to an area hospital, where his injury was considered non-life threatening. The man was riding a 2016 Lance Scooter southbound in the 3800 block of Rosecrans Street at 10:25 p.m. Saturday as a 51-year-old man driving a 2002 Ford pickup truck was going northbound on Rosecrans Street.

A San Diego police officer was in serious, but stable condition and a pedestrian was in critical condition with life- threatening injuries Thursday [Feb. 28] morning after they were both struck by a vehicle on a street in the Midway District. November 2018

Oct 2014
A bicyclist was killed in a bike-car collision. This happened late Tuesday – Oct. 7– around 11:15 p.m. The cyclist was pedaling west on Hancock Street in the Midway area, down where Rosecrans and the freeway gets all crazy.
March 2014
A bicyclist was injured in a hit and run car accident Monday night in the Midway District. That was March 17th. The unidentified rider was in the 3700 block of Midway Dr about 11 pm when he was struck from behind. Fleeing the scene, the driver left the 44 year old bicyclist with a head injury and dislocated shoulder. He was taken to a local hospital and is expected to recover.
My original premise is true. There have a lot of pedestrians killed or injured in the Midway District.

Midway Rising makes no sense if the entire area isn’t improved providing pedestrian connections to Old Town Transit Center, an active transportation connection to Downtown through Pacific Highway or some other direct route, and a safe way to get from Ocean Beach without driving a car. We cannot load all that traffic onto the streets and freeways in that area. We aren’t building double-decker or subterranean capacity for more vehicles. We need to have the developer pay for all the infrastructure needed to shift the mode share in some appreciable way for visitors and residents of Midway Rising if this is really happening. If they won’t pay for it, then don’t build it!
The City considers it a priority for traffic deaths that occurred within 3 years. So if residents want to take action to install , lighzs, szop sign or traffic calming measures now is the best time.
In Jamacha we have a death corner, at Imperial Ave & Viewcrest Drive, with 5 deaths but not within 3 years so traffic stop was denied per D4. Although the City has been sued over atleast 2 deaths.
I emailed Mayor, City Attorney, SDPD, Planning, District 4, MTS, to put them on notice of the hazzardous area, to remove deniability when the next death occcurs. Hopefully, they will be held accountable for failing to take prevention measures.
The Midway residents should consider emailing their Council District, and creating a record to help any future families that sue the City over deaths of a loved one.

Since posting comment above a new death occurred in “Jamacha Corner of Death”, Viewcrest Dr. & Imperial Avenue.
Luck Prewitt Starkes, traffic accudent November 18, 2025, resukting in her death on November 24, 2025.
This article is not about Jamacha.
But all reporters consistently report inaccurate Neighborhoods of traffic accidents in Jamacha, District 4, they fail due diligence to read the Council District 4 map for accurate Neighborhoods, and fail to review the legally binding, Skyline- Paradise Hills Community Plan, Neighnorhood Element.
This was another accident that occurred in the Jamacha Neighborhood! A legally binding Neighborhood name.
This accident on 11/118/2025 was an avoidable accident as far as I am concerned.
As the City of San Diego, and Council District 4 to my knowledge received requests to add a street light as far back as in 2003, by the now inactive Jamacha Community Council, and in 2006 by the Jamacha Neighborhood Council.
The Jamacha Neighborhood Council requested verbally and in writing a new Traffic Study for a stop sign due to speeding, and deaths this was received by Councilmember Henry L. Foster, lll, in addition to request to be added to the 2025 Budget Priority list, CIP project list, to add a Stop sign at this location.
Due to a 2021 death, and past deaths, and lawsuits that highlighted how dark this area is and the long stretch between Lisbon St. and Viewcrest Dr. without traffic calming an area with long history of deaths, drag racing and speeding.
The new traffic study, to add traffic calming a street light or stop sign at Viewcrest Dr. and Imperial Avenue that was requested 14 months before this death occurred. No traffic calming was implemented.
The City has been sued over other deaths in this very same location of Viewcrest aDrm & Imperial Avenue.
The City of San Diego, Mayor Todd Gloria, Planning Department, Heidi Vonblum, Transportation Deparrment, Tait Galloway, and Councilmember Henry L. Foster, lll, all failed to take action and now 14 months later another death has occurred!
The area of this left turning lane has a tiny sign Notice of past deaths by a non profit.
The Jamacha Neighborhood Council submitted the request by Certified Registered mail to Councilmember Henry Foster in January 2025, for a new traffic study to add a street light or stop sign at Viewcrest St. and Imperial avenue.
On September 27, 2024, two residents of Jamacha Neighborhood meet at a Foster Friday meeting and a Transportation Study was requested due to my finding out about the 2021 death in the same location. The past deaths are hard to track as they are inaccurately listed by reporters as Skyline Neighborhood, Encanto Neighborhood, Lomita Neighborhood, as sometimes even Lemon Grove, wrong city!.
At the meeting Councilmember Henry Foster requested that I submit prior traffic deaths at this location, and at Lisbon St & Vaqueros Tac, 2006 murder over unresolved issue due to traffic with cars blocking Lisbon St. to enter Vaqueros Taco aka ” The Barrel” that completely block the former lane at Lisbon St, now made narrower due to unwanted Bike lanes added that violated the Community Plan, Transportation Element, Bicycle Route,,Neighborhood Element.
All deaths were submitted to Councilmember Henry L. Foster, lll, via email within a week of this 2024 meeting.
As of today, January 27, 2026, District 4, has never provided me with a new transportation study, speed study, after the 9/27/2024, meeting, requested due to safety and past deaths.
In 2024, and 2025, the Mayor, Todd Gloria, City Attorney Heather Ferbert, have received atleast two emails before this tragic death occurred.
The City of San Diego Transportation dept. and Heidi Von Blum program manager, were aware via emails submitted of the safety concerns at the ” Jamacha Corner of Death”
Please contact me to help provide written data, that the City was aware of this problem to hold the City liable for the November 18, 2025, death, 14 months after numerous pleas.
