‘Spill the Beans’ Coming to Former Bank Drive-Thru Kiosk

Apparently delayed at least a year from opening due to the pandemic, the latest coffee house to arrive in OB is still … uh, arriving — it’s still under construction.

Spill the Beans will be opening in the drive-thru kiosk of US Bank near the intersection of Newport Ave and Sunset Cliffs Blvd.

Here’s what the Rag reported back in Nov. 29, 2022:

A locally-owned coffee house is moving into the former US Bank at 4827 Newport Avenue in OB. Spill the Beans is apparently on a binge; it currently has two locations in Gaslamp and Seaport Village, and is set to open their Ocean Beach and Mission Valley locations next year.

Their website doesn’t give out too many details, but offers this:

Freshly made, inventive and conscientious, Spill the Beans is rapidly defining how adults should begin their day. Our coffee surpasses the expectations in both taste and sustainability. The food we pair with your cup of joe pretty much tells it all. Slather one of our scratch-made bagels with artisan-compounded butter or your selection of house-made cream cheeses.

The coffee house is especially appealing to the young and the hip. They advertise themselves as “Pot Head” — as in coffee pot — and have other slogans on their website that seem to cater to the cannabis-infused customer.

A former lawyer and current grassroots activist, I have been editing the Rag since Patty Jones and I launched it in Oct 2007. Way back during the Dinosaurs in 1970, I founded the original Ocean Beach People’s Rag - OB’s famous underground newspaper -, and then later during the early Eighties, published The Whole Damn Pie Shop, a progressive alternative to the Reader.

  1. Finally, some legit bagels coming to OB! Nothing worse than the yoga mat bagels we have in the neighborhood. This is a welcome upgrade and I look forward to supporting fellow San Diegans bringing darn good bagels to OB.

      1. That is in Pt Loma and I am sure it is lovely. I was speaking about OB proper. For those of us who have given up cars and enjoy the walkability of OB, it’s nice to have such a fine option within walking distance of our home. Just like I love being able to grab a warm pain au chocolat from Azucar in the morning, having a fresh NY-style bagel or BEC sandwich would be awesome.

  2. Suppose the traffic will backup on both Newport Ave & Sunset Cliffs Blvd?
