Update on OB Pier Repairs – Video

The Ocean Beach Pier will not be open by Memorial Day.

The City now hopes it will need only 2 to 3 weeks more to effect the temporary repairs needed to reopen the Pier.

$8.4 million has been set aside by the city for the pier, with full cost of replacement estimates between $60 to $65 million. $5 million would cover all the environmental review, consultant fees and staff time to get “Shovel Ready.

That video is the equivalent of two still photos of the pier that could have been posted here. Why bother making it a video and uploading it to YouTube?

Anyone remember “Empire”? It is a 1965 American black-and-white silent art film by Andy Warhol. When projected according to Warhol’s specifications, it consists of eight hours and five minutes of slow motion footage of an unchanging view of New York City’s Empire State Building. The film does not have conventional narrative or characters, and largely reduces the experience of cinema to the passing of time.Warhol stated that the purpose of the film was “to see time go by.”

A week after the film was shot, experimental filmmaker Jonas Mekas (who was cinematographer for Empire) speculated in the Village Voice that Warhol’s film would have a profound influence on avant-garde cinema. In 2004, Empire was included in the annual selection of 25 motion pictures added to the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress, who deemed it “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant”. Film director James Benning did that with some of his films as well. His Wikipedia page has this to say:

His philosophy of “landscape as a function of time,” and “Looking and Listening” (which is also the name of a course taught by Benning) is particularly evident in his films since 1999 in the form of fixed, stable shots. For instance, each of El Valley Centro, Los, and Sogobi—The California Trilogy (2000-2001) is composed of 35 2½ minute shots. Nightfall (2012) consists of a single 98-minute shot made at a high elevation in the woods in the west Sierras that begins in late afternoon as the sun is going down and ends in near blackness.

So now you can say that the YouTube of OB Pier was stylistically inspired by some film greats!
