Starbucks in Ocean Beach Closes … Finally? – No, Not Really

Well, kiddies, looks like the Starbucks in OB has closed and moved on. There’s a sign in one of the windows that announces that OB Kabob will be moving into the storefront at the corner of Newport Avenue and Bacon Street.

Nope. Not yet. Sorry. It’s Seth’s Chop Shop that is being remodeled and will be the site of the new OB Kabob.

This Starbucks opened the day of the 9-11 attacks and suffered through months and years of boycotts and demonstrations out side its doors.  And even though there were reports it was operating in the red, the corporation wanted apparently to show that it would not be intimidated by local boycotts. It even stayed open after mother Starbucks closed some 400 storefronts a few years ago.

Many locals refused to go in, despite the official boycott succumbing to the years.  And a reliable source told us a contractor on the job says he can’t believe how many folks have walked by and commented “Boy, we were hoping they were moving out!”

  1. To paraphrase Mark Twain… the reports of Starbuck’s closure are greatly exaggerated . The new restaurant in going in to the space formerly occupied by Seth’s Chop Shop.

  2. Hmmm, we are definitely getting conflicting reports about the possible closure of OB Starbucks. Do I have to get off my couch and go see for myself? Guess so.

  3. ATTENTION!!! the “Editor Dude” wants everyone to know that the shop is NOT Closing for good! It will re-open on Monday, July 16. Sorry for any confusion. the “editor Dudes” buddy.

  4. I say party in the street when the *Bucks closes! Never been there! Love Azucar @ 4820 Newport Ave San Diego

  5. I like Starbucks good coffee, good company with good benefits and alaways intereseting employees. There are other good coffee shops in OB, Jungle Java, comes to mind which is probably my favorite but those Starbucks on a long drive are the best, the miles fly by

  6. Azucar, Java Jungle, New Break–plenty of locals to support.
Corporate Food is just another arm of the govorporation.

    1. So Azucar, Java Jungle , New Break and other locals coffee places do not use products, food stuffs, supplies or incidental business items such as form’s , stationary, table cloths, napkins , pens , light bulbs etc….that come from the traditional corporate source??
I would guess that is not the case. I would also guess they get virtually all of their business items from the Corporate Food Govorporation stream…..Maybe I am mistaken ….

  7. I submitted a Reader story on this but they did not use it. This Starbucks is 10 years old & the manager told me it is corporate policy to remodel or “refresh” retail stores when they hit that age mark. Also she told me the new construction will really add some “pizzazz” to the place. The manager dis admit that a new bathroom will be installed and that they will open their restrooms to the public again.
