The Douche Distraction: Hail to the V, bye-bye Roe V Wade?

in Anna's Video Pick, Popular, Women's Rights

While the sturm und drang of the debt ceiling debate drowns out the howls of distress of the American public going down with the ship, we are being treated to an equally diversionary coverage of the significant women’s issue of the day. Did someone say douche? I didn’t say douche but someone said douche.

Not Safe for Work

It appears that Summer’s Eve, which I assume is the leading purveyor of wookie wash, has undertaken an amusing, “empowering,” provocative ad campaign, as long as you don’t question their basic marketing assumption that a woman’s vagina, au natural, is somewhere on the continuum of icky to disgusting.

I learned about this campaign from a very lively article recently posted in Salon.  There was certainly an internet buzz on the subject, and then I watched Stephen Colbert brilliantly turn the mother of all yoni memes inside out.

While Colbert pitches the case that there should be an attendant campaign launched at the male hygiene “down there” in Penisvania, I kept hitting the replay and watching how the Summer Eve campaign was being pitched to African American women and Latinas. For the former, a Lady Wowza approach, and for the latter “Lo he visto practicamente todo,” I have seen just about everything…

Summer’s Eve speaks to the diversity of American women at the same time that it has also been revealed that Latinos and African Americans are experiencing a disproportionate loss in wealth..  So while poor women–read predominately women of color–might derive a certain comfort from knowing that their lady parts are squeaky clean as they fill out an application for a pay day loan or submit their unemployment papers or try to stretch a food stamp budget, there is perhaps a more serious obstacle that these same women may end up facing. Beyond female hygiene, Summer’s Eve extols a woman’s sense of sexual confidence.

If you are a poor woman, how much sexual confidence do you really have if birth control is not available or unaffordable? How much sexual confidence can you have if your birth control doesn’t work or if you have been raped? How much sexual confidence can you have if you need a constitutionally protected abortion and your county or state has made it impossible for you to get one or has made the requirements so onerous that you can’t bear to go through that particular agony?

As I write this I have read that a Planned Parenthood Clinic outside of Dallas was hit by a Molotov cocktail and that Summer’s Eve has pulled its provocative ads. The Republican party, touting job creation as their number one task at hand since their midterm victories in the states and the House of Representatives, has created no jobs but they have declared war on women and their reproductive choice and health.

I’ll let you decide who is the douche in all of this.

I wasn’t aware of this campaign, but I am now. . .Great piece, and thank you for including all our sisters in your shout out!

An incredibly brilliant article by Terrie Leigh Relf, that takes a very humorous, yet critical look at the various components of our messed up society, in regards to what our priorities should be and to what they seem to end up being.

It is true, us guys really do appreciate a woman who takes care of herself and has an inviting aroma of confidence…however…in circumstances that prevail in most women’s lives…appeasing a man is the last of their concerns…especially when just trying to survive in life is the number one priority.

In regards to how our public/elected officials seem to focus on the most asinine of concerns instead of more widespread and broad-based effecting areas of interest, such as Public Education for K-12 (giving our children better educations), Public Safety, Better Roads, Cleaner Beaches, Parks, Communities and a more Fiscally Responsible & Efficiently Run Government who can produce surpluses instead of deficits and take care of the essential duties of providing a well run infa-structure to which the previously mentioned services are SUPPOSED to be provided, Terrie hits the mark.

I wish our society was more focused on what would benefit all of us in bettering our lives instead of the hate filled divisiveness that seems to be spurned on by the Extreme Right and Extreme Left, including their crack-smoking Media Minions who live to just add fuel to the fire.

If we could pull our heads out of our collective sphincters and focus on making our communities cleaner, safer, self-sufficient and more prosperous…perhaps that would allow us to finally take back the power that has been given to those whose only concerns are the lining of their pockets and the maintaining of their power…thus allowing us to avoid having an advertisement of the this kind (Summers Eve Ad) cause such a stir, when it was meant to just have a little fun in promoting a little freshness in one of the happiest places on Earth.

I could be wrong…but that’s “This Jews Point of View”.

Thank you Patty for the correction.

Hey Laurence – I think we both agree that maintaining the Happiest Place on Earth requires more than a wash & rinse! ;)

anna, i haven’t laughed so hard in ages. the fact that i’ve now seen, and can’t unsee, the Colbert report posted above ~ will have me sharing this for years to come.

All hail to the V

I want a T-shirt that says “Hail to the V”. Douching isn’t necessary – ever, unless your OB-GYN Doc recommends it (it upsets the delicate flora and could cause a yeast infection to happen – especially if you are on antibiotics). This ad campaign is brilliant. Phenomenally Brilliant!! That’s what it’s about people – getting the masses to purchase something they don’t need. LMFAO. and yes – I still want the T-shirt.

OMG, thanks for sharing this, Anna. With Autumnal Afternoon and all, this is some of Colbert at his brilliant best.

And you are so right, the versions of the commercial with the “urban feel” are unbelievable. I think “Lady Wowza” is going to be my new all-purpose exclamation for the rest of the summer.

Thanks for a great read, Anna! Very well done……
