Don’t Believe Mayor Gloria’s Homeless Shelter Numbers

Source  October 24, 2024  3 Comments on Don’t Believe Mayor Gloria’s Homeless Shelter Numbers

The Voice of San Diego opened today with a salvo against Mayor Todd Gloria’s percentages of increasing homeless shelter capacities. It is alarming. Here it is:

Mayor Todd Gloria wants you to know an important fact: He has increased shelter capacity by 70 percent.

Only, he hasn’t.

Across the airwaves and in his ballot statement, voters are blasted with the 70 percent figure. It’s a key reason, Gloria wants San Diegans to vote for him.

The Voice’s reporter, Will Huntsberry, found that Gloria has increased shelter capacity by only roughly 32 percent. The online newspaper says, “That’s not too shabby. Nor is it anywhere near 70 percent.”

by Yue Stella Yu and Jenna Peterson / CalMatters / October 24, 2024

In summary

Only one-third of the California GOP congressional delegation has pledged to accept the 2024 presidential election results. And only two incumbents in office in 2021 voted to certify President Joe Biden’s win over Donald Trump in the 2020 race. [Please see original here for important links. Here’s the total California House delegation]

In January 2021, seven of the 11 California Republicans in Congress refused to certify the 2020 presidential election results, boosting former President Donald Trump’s false claim that he lost in a rigged vote.

‘I Have to Believe … We’re Not Going to Lose Our Democracy’

I have to “believe,” as President Reagan often prefaced his remarks.  I have to “believe” there are more good Americans than not.

I have to “believe” that Speaker Emeriti, Nancy Pelosi, has the “coup” threat covered.

Her strategic genius in all things political, culminating in the ousting of President Biden, already prove the case.  Add the huge campaign contributions to Democrats, the down-ballot strategy (already working), the broadening of the coalition to include superstar entertainers, economists, GOP Governors, and former GOP Rep. Liz Cheney’s non-stop appearances in red state suburbs alongside Harris, have achieved bi-partisan “lift-off.”

Remove the Label — Fire the Mayor

We are advised “do not remove the label.”  We see that warning on our new mattress, pillow, or hair dryer. Do we leave the label on forever? What happens if we cut off the label immediately?

My advice, “remove the label”!

We are likely to make big decisions based on labels.  Who we vote for is probably impacted by the labels we identify with.

I did an experiment once many many years ago in a class of high school students.  We had a presidential debate.  The rules were: facts had to be identified, opinions also, and NO labels.  Many words become labels, and during this class debate these words could not be used, they were buzzed if used. Democrat, Republican, liberal, conservative, right, left, progressive. (Today I would add , woke, conspiracy, MAGA.) Pejoratives like Nazi, fascist, and racist were not allowed.

What Project 2025 Could Mean for San Diego – Reproductive Rights, School Funding, Climate Warnings

By Amita Sharma / KPBS / October 21, 2024

As the presidential race nears its finish, Project 2025 continues to be a lightning rod.

The Heritage Foundation’s 922-page, 30-chapter document subtitled “Mandate for Leadership, The Conservative Promise” lays out a plan to dramatically reshape the federal government starting on day one of the next conservative president’s term.

“The federal government is a behemoth, weaponized against American citizens and conservative values, with freedom and liberty under siege as never before,” Project 2025 states.

If carried out after the election, Project 2025 could have broad local impacts, including drastic upheavals in school funding, which cases federal and state prosecutors pursue, and climate warnings.

Marti Emerald: ‘Don’t Fall for Kevin Faulconer’s Claim of Solving the Homeless Crisis’

I know adults like to wear costumes in October. And there’s nothing wrong with indulging one’s fantasies. But I still cringe whenever I see Kevin Faulconer pretending he’s an expert on solving homelessness.

Talk about chutzpah!

I watched Faulconer’s ineptitude in dealing with homelessness for eight years while I was on the City Council. At the time, no one regarded him as successful — at anything. He sure didn’t fix the homeless problem. On his watch, it kept getting worse.

Fact: While Faulconer was mayor, the number of unsheltered homeless people in San Diego increased 124%. (From 1,016 in 2007, after his first year as mayor, to 2,283 in 2020, his last.)

Former White House Chief of Staff General John Kelly Calls Trump ‘Fascist’

Source  October 23, 2024  1 Comment on Former White House Chief of Staff General John Kelly Calls Trump ‘Fascist’

From NPR / October 23, 2024

Donald Trump‘s previous chief of staff criticized the former president this week, calling Trump’s leadership style “dictatorial,” “fascist” and lacking empathy.

John Kelly is one of several Trump-era White House officials to publicly criticize their former boss, arguing that Trump is not fit to hold office again.

“Certainly the former president is in the far-right area, he’s certainly an authoritarian, admires people who are dictators – he has said that,” Kelly said in an interview with The New York Times. “So he certainly falls into the general definition of fascist, for sure.”

Relief Received After TV Station Intervenes

Michael Mudurian served in the Air Force and then settled into his Point Loma home with an ocean view 50 years ago.

For decades, the lifelong bachelor said he had a pretty high water bill because he loved to water his garden and nourish the lush, green grass in his front yard. However, the grass became dead and brown because Mudurian couldn’t afford his water bill; it was a stunning $28,500 in August after the city’s Public Utilities Department had held his bill for over a year.

To Rag readers

I wanted to share with our many Rag readers the latest writing assignment I’ve given our writers and reporters.

This may be the most unusual writing assignment you’ve ever been given, but here it is —

It’s 2 weeks before election day. It appears that due to slow counts and other election day headaches, it’s likely we won’t know officially who won the Presidential election on the 5th of November.

But we do know that Trump will declare himself the victor and set in motion collaboration from state election boards, state reps and other highly-placed acolytes that will sow disinformation, confusion and outright sabotage to our election machinery.

A Message for Some Young Brothers Who Have Got Some Serious Thinking to Do

I’d like to say this to you

young brothers

who’re backing Donald J. Trump:

you’ve got some serious thinking to do,

especially about that point-of-view

you have that we African Americans

have nothing to gain

through politics.
