Musings by the Widder Curry on Women Coming Out With Tales of Sexual Harassment

As I sat in the beauty shop the other day waiting to have my hair cut, I picked up a copy of the latest People magazine. On the cover was a picture of Harvey Weinstein and page after page of women talking about how he had molested, raped, threatened etc. And as I looked at the pictures – I wasn’t really interested in reading about all of their experiences – I had to sit back and reflect over my life time, because what happened to those women did not just happen to famous people; it happened, and is still happening to women all over the world.

I am getting old. Very old. But it sure doesn’t take much to remember the assaults that I faced; the threats I faced; the acts foisted upon me. And the interesting thing is that even at my age it hasn’t stopped.

Sometimes people celebrating their birthday want to just forget about it; others want it to go on for a few extra days. My friend Mary is one of the latter people, and, after celebrating her birthday Saturday night at another restaurant, she decided it would be fun to celebrate again at BO-beau’s in Ocean Beach.

It started out as a frustrating experience because when I called to make a reservation I was told that they didn’t take reservations but I could be placed on a “waiting list” and would be called as soon as our 6:30pm table was available. (Their menu on-line encourages you to make a reservation.)

Thank you.

When the OB Rag throws a party, they know what to do: Food, entertainment; raffles; drinks; good company; great people, etc.

I would like to thank those of you that introduced yourselves to me and thanked me for the articles I have written for the Rag for over 8 years.

I have been so reluctant to go to Sunnie’s since they have reopened. My review of them awhile back was less than stellar, and I was afraid that this time it would be no different. I am so happy to say that it was 180 degrees different this time than last time.

It was a very hot night and I just didn’t feel like cooking. Hitomi had school until 7:00pm, and my other student had gone out for “Taco Tuesday.” I decided to “bite the taco” – and try Sunnie’s again.

On the one day of the week that the weather changed from 80 degrees to 68 degrees, windy, and wet, was the one day that the Widows were getting together for lunch. So it was left up to me to find a place and I remembered going to the Meechai 25 years ago. I wondered how much it had changed over the years.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that not much has changed.

The ambiance was inviting; the seating was cozy; and Janet, the server, was the same server from many years ago. What probably has changed was the menu.

City Road Blocks and Other Shenanigans Keep ‘Surf Check’ From Happening in South Ocean Beach

At a time when many protests over the fact that Target wants to becomes established in Ocean Beach rile the community, I think it is about time that people become aware of how a “little man”, wanting to start a successful business in OB is being met with frustration after frustration.

Just about a year ago I wrote an article about the Surf Check – a dream of Richard Aguirre‘s to own a small business that would enhance the local neighborhood. For those of you that are not aware of the Surf Check it is located on the northwest corner of Sunset Cliffs and Point Loma Avenue.

Many years ago, when my husband was still alive the Broken Yolk Café was one of our favorite restaurants for breakfast. When the widows decided to get together last Friday we thought it might be fun to return to the restaurant on Midway Drive. We had all been to the one in the Grossmont area together and although I do not usually do a review of a “chain”, we decided that this chain was smaller than many and we’d give it a try.

Parking is not a problem and getting to it from Midway was relatively easy.

The Widder Curry Says: ‘Water, Water Everywhere, But Too Expensive to Use’

In the past few days – probably after everyone received their new water bill, I have been inundated – not to be confused with the terrible floods on the east coast – with calls from people asking me if I saw a difference in my water bill this month. Without exception, everyone that called found huge increases in spite of the fact that their water consumption had not increased.

I am always delighted when someone that has read my reviews asks if they can do one with me. I want to encourage my readers to do just that. And today, I met a “new friend” – Kareen, who agreed to try out The Pho Shop – (where the Mandarin Plaza Chinese Buffet used to be, behind the Red Lobster.)

In talking to Michael, our server, we found out that the restaurant is family owned and many of the recipes are from different members of the family. Michael, by the way, knew his menu and his food, and was a delight to have as our server.

The Mindless Wanderings of the Widder Curry

Judi Curry  September 5, 2017  7 Comments on The Mindless Wanderings of the Widder Curry

After finding out that I write for the OB Rag and sometimes the San Diego Free Press, people frequently ask me what I write about besides doing Restaurant Reviews. It is difficult to pinpoint what I EXACTLY write about – because I find that my mind (yes – I still have one -) tends to wander all over the place; sometimes enough to write an article; sometimes to get really p – – – – – off; sometimes just to create a discussion.

So this Labor Day Weekend, alone for the first time in 4 ½ years since Cowboy dumped me, I have had a lot of time to ponder many different things. Some I’ll share with you. And for those of you that don’t like my wanderings – DON’T READ IT! I’m writing this as a catharsis for me. I’d like you to enjoy it; think about it, but if you don’t want to do so, it’s fine. Just don’t write back and tell me that my Editordude must have gone soft because he published this drivel. Here goes –

As a former educator, Administrator – read Principal – I was appalled when the Boards of Education in many school districts changed the starting dates for school to the middle of August.

In all my years of reviewing restaurants, I have never come across a true Guamanian restaurant, food from the island of Guam, an island that’s been in the news of late.

Guahan Grill is a family run, Chamorro restaurant. In fact, one of our servers – Wilma – was born on the island of Taipei , just off the coast of Guam. Christine, our other server, has never been to Guam.

Their menu states:

It’s been almost 30 years since I have had a meal at Kaiserhof. The last time I did they were still located in the Mission Valley/State College area.

When my friend Barbara suggested that we go to lunch at Kaiserhof I jumped at the chance. My background has German/Hungarian heritage and I thought it would be nice to see how authentic Bavarian food would taste compared to what I make in the kitchen.

Although there is a parking lot in the back of the building, there were no available parking spaces
