In my quest to try almost all of the restaurants in the Ocean Beach and Point Loma area that I have never tried before, I asked my friends Jim and Marilyn if they would like to join me for this review of Flavors of Mayura. I knew that they liked Indian food because I had introduced them to another Indian restaurant on Midway Drive. I was happy when they said yes.

Not so long ago, I met a man at the Point Loma Living Room for a first date. The thought went through my mind at that time that I wondered how the place had stayed in business; it was dirty; drab looking; and just didn’t have a nice feeling. (Ed. See Judi’s review from 2013) I don’t know if my never seeing him again had anything to do with the place but…..

I had heard that it had been sold recently, so when Irene and I decided to have brunch together I thought it might be interesting to see if it had changed. And I am happy to report that it has changed, and for the better!

Graduations and Another Good Reason to Ride the Train

Judi Curry  August 2, 2017  1 Comment on Graduations and Another Good Reason to Ride the Train

This has been a month of graduations. My grandson – one of twins – graduated with his Master’s in Social Work. (His twin graduated last year with the same degree.) Two of my grandsons graduated from high school, and one of them won a wrestling scholarship to Central University in Iowa. (If you have been reading my columns for awhile, you might remember the article I wrote about my grandson going from the dance floor to the wrestling mat.)

This article really isn’t about my grandson, per se, but his graduation is the catalyst for this article being written.

Several weeks ago I met someone that asked me if I had tried Hector’s. He said it has been in Pt. Loma for years, and, to be honest, I had never even heard of it. (It is located on Rosecrans as per address, but I was directed to take Locust Street and then Carlton to get to it. It is very close to West Marine, and it is easy to miss because it is on the back of the parking lot of the Mail Boxes Express.)

The person that told me about Hector’s said that he makes the best breakfast burrito in town, and has an excellent homemade salsa.

The Widder Curry Asks: ‘How Much is that Hooker on the Ocean?’

Judi Curry  July 26, 2017  4 Comments on The Widder Curry Asks: ‘How Much is that Hooker on the Ocean?’

Editor: The Widder Curry writes that in the past 3-4 weeks she has noticed an odd thing happening on Sunset Cliffs. Women are walking by, very scantily dressed, not walking their dog, and being fairly flamboyant in their dress. At the same time she has noticed that cars are coming by; talking to these women, and the next thing she knows, she says, the women are getting into the cars. So, she has come up the following, to be sung to the tune of “How Much Is That Doggie in the Window.”

______________

How Much is that Hooker on the Ocean?
The one with her boobs hanging out,
she sways as she walks on the sidewalk,
I wonder what it’s all about.

Hours – 11:00am – 10:00pm, all week

My former student, Monica, left it up to me to decide where to go, and I thought it would be fun to introduce her to food that she has never tried before – hence the Kabob Village – for Greek and Mediterranean food. We arranged to meet at the restaurant at noon on Sunday.

The inside is open and spacious, and wonderful, quiet mood music was playing.

When this restaurant closed down a few months ago I was sorry that I had not patronized it more often. I was thrilled to see that it reopened in May, and when Marilyn came into town from Ohio today I decided to go back and see if it was as good now as it was originally. I am happy to say it is!

While not a standard breakfast menu, there are plenty of items to choose from. And, for those of you that need gluten free meals, almost all of the items have a “gf” designation.

The menu starts out with French Toast ($10); and goes to Short Rib Machaca Burrito ($11); Sweet Potato Hash is $12 as is Biscuits and Gravy. There is a Kimchi Fried Rice ($14); Chilaquiles Stack for $13;

The Widder Curry Asks: ‘A Scam from Frys?’

GRRR! Last week my microwave oven broke. Since a neighbor had her house catch on fire due to a faulty microwave, I decided rather than limp along with a door that had to be banged shut rather than closed normally and risk the possibility of fire I would purchase a new one.

I did extensive research, and decided on a Panasonic 2.2 CuFt Inverter Countertop, and then did price checks on those places offering the oven.

Not surprisingly, I ended up making the purchase from Amazon, which seems to be where I am purchasing everything lately. The total cost was $187. It was to be delivered the next day – a Monday.

In the Sunday paper, I happened to notice the Frys’ ad – good only on Sunday– and they had the exact same oven listed for $99.99!

The Widder Curry Asks: ‘What’s a Service Dog?’

Judi Curry  July 3, 2017  13 Comments on The Widder Curry Asks: ‘What’s a Service Dog?’

“I Love My Dog, but….”

Let’s get one thing straight. I LOVE MY DOG, SHADOW. And I love his playmate “Rolle”. I love Shadow’s cousin “Toby”. There have only been two dogs in my lifetime that I did not love – the German Shepard that bit me when I was 5 years old, and the Pit Bull that attacked Shadow two years ago causing me to break my leg in three places, as well as my ankle and the cheek bone.

Other than those two dogs, I cannot think of any dog I don’t go “gaga” over. So when I received a note from a neighbor – Barb – saying that there is a lot of discussion about “service dogs” and other animals being brought EVERYWHERE, I decided to do some investigation and see what I could find out.

It Was a Grueling Morning – Afternoon

By Judi Curry

Actually the following intro has nothing to do with what my day was like yesterday, except to lay the ground work for why I was at the Verizon store in the morning.

The day before was an exciting day: My last grandchild – Zac – graduated from High School in Orange County. Just the week before Colin, another grandson also graduated from High School. And two weeks before that one of my twin grandsons – Landon – and his girlfriend Tiffany – graduated from Fullerton State with their Master’s Degree in Social Work. (The other twin – Logan – and his girlfriend Irene graduated last year with their Masters.)

An Unnecessary Embarrassment for 39 Cents

An embarrassing thing happened to me the other day while shopping at Ralphs. Something that had me puzzled, and later pissed off.

Several months ago I purchased an item from an on-line seller. I returned it, but didn’t notice that it took almost 8 weeks to issue me a credit. In the meantime, Mission Federal Credit Union – the institution I have banked at since 1966! charged me interest on the remaining balance.

I protested the charge, and, in the end, I thought it was all taken care of. A credit appeared for the merchandise. BUT I did not check the amount of the credit carefully – my error.
