Reader Rant: ‘There’s a Safety Hazard Near Barnes Tennis Center’

By Bill B

I am writing to urgently report a persistent safety hazard near the Barnes Tennis Center.

Drivers visiting the facility are continuously running the stop sign on the street, often with minors in their vehicles.

This has become a major safety issue. I have nearly been hit by vehicles multiple times just attempting to walk to the bus stop, and the situation has led to verbal altercations.

Over 100 vehicles run this stop sign daily, and the traffic becomes exceptionally dangerous during events.

Despite bringing this to the attention of the Barnes Tennis Center for over a year, the issue has not been addressed, and many drivers dismiss the matter by incorrectly claiming the road is private property.

Furthermore, I have been unable to get an officer to come to the location to investigate. I have documented this ongoing issue with over 1,000 photos and videos.

Please let me know how this matter can be investigated and resolved before someone is severely injured.

  1. There’s a form on the SDPD webpage to Request Extra Patrol. That team works sections of the City at a time. It may take up to 2-3 weeks to work your section of the City. But on the form, is there a specific day of the week it’s the worst? Is there a time of day it’s the worst? Be sure to note that day of the week and that time of the day. Because they will not assign a motorcycle unit to sit there all day or every day to monitor it. It needs to be specific because if PD assigns a MC unit or two, they go there, and after waiting for the issue to happen and it doesn’t they’ll scratch it off their things to do list. You can also ask for them to notify you with their results.

    1. After 4pm the worst and when they have tournament but from 8pm tell 10 is the worst when everyone is leaving the easement from the tennis courts has a stop sign they don’t acknowledge it as a stop sign because they don’t read the law

      1. Put the specific issues/problems on the form and submit it to SDPD. That’s the only viable means to get it under control, and bear in mind, the drivers will start doing it again as soon as the cops are gone, so file the report again and again, until the drivers learn. A few tickets should give them a clue.
