An unidentified body washed ashore Thursday afternoon, June 18, near the Ocean Beach Pier.
Police were called to the area around 3 p.m. after someone had discovered the body.
The San Diego Coroner took possession of the body. It has yet to be determined what the cause of death was.

Saturday: The badly decomposed body of an unidentified woman washed ashore near the Ocean Beach Pier on Thursday afternoon, June 18, 2026. Rescuers recovered the body from the surf line around 3:00 p.m., and the San Diego County Medical Examiner took custody to determine the identity and cause of death.
This woman was my daughter, Summer. She was beautiful, deeply empathetic, and an accomplished athlete. Over the past couple of years, she’s spent much of her time surfing beaches from Tourmaline to Mission. The loss is insurmountable.
We’re tremendously sorry for your great loss. Can you share anything about Summer with us?
Summer was a brilliant, unstoppable force. She loved her sisters, the wild outdoors, and very tiny things. She traveled extensively, describing in enthusiastic detail all of the people, customs, and art along the way. She enjoyed privacy, preferring instead to help others attain the spotlight.
Her sisters and I are struggling to comprehend this eventuality.
I am so sorry to hear the news about this. I tried hard to help her at Tourmaline over the last year or so. She always seemed like such a sweet and gentle soul. She was also very brave. The guys at Tourmaline can tell you about one night when an out of control drunk guy came to pick a fight after already being told to chill out by the cops, and when he came to confront us again Sunmer stood right in the way blocking him. I tried to bring her to church with us various times and pray with her and share The Bible with her. One of my last times talking to her I believe I prayed for her briefly when we were standing chest high in the water during surfing. Her surfing was getting so good, and ai made sure I told her that. I am so sad to hear this news and praying for, and I know that others are as well.
That’s a wonderful memory, and I thank you for sharing. That would be a very typical thing for Summer to do!
Summer was so dear to me. Lover of good food and deep conversations. One of my favorite things about her was her desire to understand. How things worked, how things grew, how people operated. She was gracious and wildly adventurous. She inspired me to practice art, write poems, and enjoy all of the small details in our beautiful world. I’m so sorry for your loss. I’m so sorry for the world to lose a person who had depth more than anyone else I’ve ever met.
Summer had so many gifts and dreams and was a gift to so many. We loved and enjoyed Summer and her family of gifted women since she was a very young girl. She was so easy to LOVE and we all did!
