Should Portions of Mission Bay Park Be Declared ‘Surplus Land’ and Made Available to Affordable Housing Developers? — Attend Mission Bay Park Committee Meeting Tuesday, August 5

By Donna Frye

The Mission Bay Park Committee will meet August 5 at 6 p.m. at the Paradise Point Resort to discuss Item 202 and hear public testimony on the mayor’s proposal to declare three properties in Mission Bay Park “surplus land” and make the properties available to affordable housing developers as part of the process.

This issue was heard and continued at the July 29 City Council meeting.

Below are links to view the Mission Bay Park Committee meeting agenda and also the mayor’s staff report. If you cannot attend the meeting in person, you can submit online comments using the link below.

Please let the committee know that you do NOT support declaring Mission Bay Park “surplus land” especially since no options for seeking an exemption to the Surplus Land Act have been provided to the city council, the Mission Bay Park Committee or to the public.

There is no urgency to declare the properties the mayor wants to lease as “surplus land” since they are all producing revenue for the city and the lease for the largest property, Marina Village, doesn’t expire until 2027.

Urge the committee to protect and preserve Mission Bay Park from being developed for uses never intended by the voters of San Diego.

Explain why that matters, not just to the future of Mission Bay Park, but also to the future of all our public parks and open space.

  1. I agree with earlier comments from the community regarding Marina Village redevelopment — aside from the deli, the marina and conference center are falling apart and need a new direction.

I’ve had a boat at Marina Village for over 10 years and have seen the mismanagement firsthand, especially under Kristopher Ingram. The business no longer serves the community or adds value.

While I don’t support selling the land for condos, I do support the long-standing Mission Bay Master Plan that includes a new lease for a hotel on the property. A new marina and competent management are also badly needed. I hope community input helps guide the City Council toward a smart, balanced decision.

  2. NEWSFLASH: AFFORDABLE HOUSING IS A RUSE FOR HYPER GENTRIFICATION AND THE REASON RENTS HAVE TRIPLED IN SAN DIEGO SINCE THE “DENSITY” MISINFORMATION CAMPAIGN BEGAN !

There is no such thing as an “affordable housing developer.” Do NOT support the declaration of OUR PARKS as “surplus lands.” City of San Diego ONLY issues permits for “planned” building of affordable housing to meet State mandated requirements.

THERE ARE NO CITY/COUNTY/STATE OR FEDERAL LAWS, NOR ARE THERE ANY LEGAL MANDATES REQUIRING THE CONSTRUCTION OF AFFORDABLE HOUSING ON-SITE.

DEVELOPERS ARE UNDER NO LEGAL OBLIGATION IN THIS STATE, TO OWN OR PURCHASE PROPERTY TO OFF-SITE AFFORDABLE HOUSING CONSTRUCTION.

THANKS TO SEAN EVIL-RIVERA DEVELOPERS ARE NOT EVEN REQUIRED TO SUBMIT PLANS & PROPOSALS FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF ANY AFFORDABLE HOUSING OFF-SITE!
