Talking Trash — Calendar of Forums for Public Feedback on Proposed Fees

There will be nothing but talking trash at the City of San Diego’s 10 community forums to get feedback on the proposed monthly trash fees. They’ve actually begun and the first one was last night, Monday, Feb. 24th at the Otay Mesa Nestor Library.

Will the feedback help determine whether the city follows through on plans to add several new services and features to its trash and recycling program that would push the fee higher than it could otherwise be, or not? There’s been plenty of irate responses to the proposed fees in “letters to the editor” in local papers and at town hall budget forums held of late.

City officials are proposing a monthly full-service rate of $53 that would rise to $65 in July 2027 when more trash and recycling services get added. But customers willing to use smaller trash bins — 35 gallons, instead of the normal 95 gallons — would pay $42 per month instead of $53, and their rate would rise only to $52 in 2027.

An online forum has also been scheduled for 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. April 4.

  1. Every apartment building should be charged $53 x the number of units if you really want to make this trash tax fair to all.

    1. They are required to have private service. Many have been on City Trash but this will be looked into and brought into compliance.

  2. Apartment and condominiums have been paying for trash removal for years! It’s about time Homeowner’s elsewhere around the county begin doing the same.

    1. Couldn’t agree more, newer homeowners in OB are likely paying over 10k a year in property taxes. They are getting off so easy…

  3. Any homeowner subject to the new fee will recieve a protest in the mail by April or May. If 50% plus one of the protests are returned, the fee will be rejected by the city.

  4. Homeowners getting off easy for paying 10K+ in property taxes? Any house with a taxable value over 834K pays 10K in property tax. Comical for renters to complain about homeowners.

  5. Condo owners split their waste collection among all those in the complex resulting in about $15/mo for them. So how is charging SFRs $50/mo equitable? All you apartment dwellers, tell us how much you pay. Every other city in San Diego County has private pay haulers and their average monthly fee is $26.80. No reason why the remaining 235,000 City customers can’t also be serviced by private haul at a reasonable fee. The City refuses to include the statistics for multi-family, commercial and other SD cities in their cost of service study analysis. Cal. Const. mandates a “reasonable” fee. The City wants to double – double – the cost of service from the current operation and then concoct the fee to cover all the added expenses, as well as for administration, adding a low income financial as assistance program that will come out of General Fund. Edco gives a senior discount. It is most important that affected property owners PROTEST and nix this. Possibly result in a much better deal.

    1. Yes, and the apartment “victims” don’t realize is for every renting and ADU situation out there, they just raised the rent. GLTY.
