‘Don’t Shop Today’ Economic Blackout for Friday, Feb. 28, Gains Support — Including From Some Celebrities

Today’s Economic Blackout has spread throughout the land, gaining attention in both the San Diego Union-Tribune, the Los Angeles Times and with a number of celebrities.

The Friday economic protest has won the backing of some public figures, who have also encouraged their fans and followers to take part in the shopping blackout. They include comedian John Leguizamo, singer Bette Midler and author Stephen King.

“This is how we exercise our Latino power,” actor and comedian John Leguizamo wrote on his Facebook page Wednesday. In his post, Leguizamo portrayed the protest as an act against the current Trump administration.

Last week, singer and actress Bette Midler also shared an image encouraging the blackout on her In-stagram account. “Don’t shop!” she said in the post. “And if you have to, please turn to a local small business!”

Author Stephen King also showed support for the protest. “Don’t buy stuff on February 28th,” he wrote on the social media site Threads. “Resist.”

  1. Is this for all purchases? I’ve got utilities to pay and a visit to my local dispensary. Do I have to wait a day for this?

    1. Yes, except for essentials and then we’re asked to only shop at small businesses. If you’re out of cannabis, then that could be an essential, but pick a small dispo. What’s one day for the utilities?

  2. I wanted to support this so didn’t buy anything today. We ate whatever we had around the house all day and didn’t spend a penny. Given the circumstances that’s probably what we’ll be doing anyway…
