‘I Have to Believe … We’re Not Going to Lose Our Democracy’

By Colleen O’Connor

I have to “believe,” as President Reagan often prefaced his remarks.  I have to “believe” there are more good Americans than not.

I have to “believe” that Speaker Emeriti, Nancy Pelosi, has the “coup” threat covered.

Her strategic genius in all things political, culminating in the ousting of President Biden, already prove the case.  Add the huge campaign contributions to Democrats, the down-ballot strategy (already working), the broadening of the coalition to include superstar entertainers, economists, GOP Governors, and former GOP Rep. Liz Cheney’s non-stop appearances in red state suburbs alongside Harris, have achieved bi-partisan “lift-off.”

Furthermore, Pelosi’s vow “to stay as long as Trump is around,” guarantees victory.

V.P. Harris will win the popular vote.  Of that there is no doubt.  I also “believe” that she will carry the electoral college vote.  With abortion on the “swing states’” ballots, and the history of voters choosing to protect women’s health care rights in even the darkest of red sates like Alabama, etc.), women will, again, decide this election.  She enjoys a 20-point edge over Trump on this issue:

“Harris holds a 20-point advantage on handling abortion, 56% to 36%, and a 15-point advantage on health care, 54% to 39%.”  USA Today/Suffolk University poll.

Follow the daily voting patterns here.

What comes after, however, is the real risk of pre-planned chaos.  Disaster and delay are Trump’s “policies.”

Hence, the need for precaution and preparation.  Assume something akin to a major California earthquake.  Advice from the earthquake centers:

“Your disaster supplies kits should include food, water, flashlights, portable radios, batteries, a first aid kit, cash, extra medications, a whistle, fire extinguisher, etc.’

Following a major disaster, communication will be an important step in your recovery efforts. Turn on your portable radio for information and safety advisories.

For most Presidentially declared disasters, resources will also be available from federal, state, and local government agencies.

Your recovery period can take several weeks to months or longer.”

Good advice. Cars, gas, freeways, etc. all vulnerable.  Re-watch the latest hurricane nightmares.

Think water shortage.  Actually, Governor Newsom has this covered. If elected, Trump will stop FEMA help, especially for CA.  He has done so before.

Next up, power outages, cyber-attacks, bank failures and random acts of violence.  Usually, high-profile for maximum fear content.

So, follow the Girl Scout’s manual or your local schools’ “Active Shooter Drill.”  Or “shelter in place.”

Ready your passport.  Canada no longer an option.  Border crossing incidents to escalate. Transport abroad might be at risk.

If Trump does prevail, NATO will be ensnared.  World War III seems to be his followers’ option of choice. “Blow it all up” their motto.  World enders as well.

“I have to believe” and now double down on what I predicted early in the OBRag.  Harris will win the Presidency.  How we, ourselves react, behave and move on, will be the real test.

“I have to believe” that we, as a democracy that saved and improved lives all over the world, the planet, and now aiming for the cosmos, will carry on in Churchillian and FDR fashion.  “No appeasement.”  “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.”

So, say I. “I have to believe.”  We are not going to lose our democracy.

  1. Booker T. Washington once said:

“A lie does not become truth, wrong does not become right, and evil does not become good just because it is accepted by a majority.”

I too pray that we will not lose our democracy, but it is truly discouraging to know that nearly half the country appears to support a fascist for President. Hilary Clinton was right in 2016 when she talked about the basket of deplorables. There just appears to be a lot more of them than I would have imagined.

  2. Trump. The draft dodger, has zero respect for our military. He has insulted and trash talked our MIA and POW’S, our goldstar families, and thinks he knows more than our military leaders with 30 to 40 years service. He refers to us as suckers and losers! He wants to play war with our k7ds. He hasn’t an ounce of stock morality, is a whoremongering liar, a racist, and a laughing stock! If he becomes president, he will turn one American againist another and blood will be running in the streets of America. He’s a classist and elitist SOB and misogyny is his is his middle name.

    1. Best, most accurate, description of Donald Trump I’ve read since he’s been dominating the national scene. Thank you!

  3. From a school mate friend.
“I just returned from a 20-day land tour of Bohemian countries – Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, and Austria. A truly fascinating and enriching experience! We listened to local languages and traditional music, heard about the history of the countries, about the glorious times, hard times of occupations, deportations, genocide, resistance, independence movements, dramatic political changes, emigration, and about the culture, traditions and religions of local people. We heard touching personal stories of people, we touched uneasy topics and uneven cobblestone streets, we smelled and tasted local food and drinks in every country, we saw beautiful architecture, monuments, churches, people, cities, countryside, nature, birds, and animals, and we saw the pride of the people of their countries and of their achievements in the last 20-25 years. Above all, I came away with a fresh perspective and appreciation of the democracy we enjoy in the states. Here we’ve never really had it taken away, and you occasionally hear people talk somewhat intellectually about threats to it. In those European countries their people had it brutally taken away and fought to gain it back over decades of oppression and lives lost. They REALLY appreciate it! I wish those in the U.S. who can be somewhat cavalier about what we take for granted in our country would take the time to visit other countries to experience and learn what democracy, and freedom, really mean, and what it would be like to lose them!”

  4. Gravitas, nice, quite nice.

We may have already lost large segments of our democracy due to money. The billionaires class, corporate USA inc, K Street DC–they all have eroded the democracy.
There’s a good article over at The Intercept regarding expenditures by
AIPAC to influence all elections in favor of the Israeli government.

    1. In addition, there’s a good article over on Truthout about Musk’s peculiar plot to influence the election with a bogus petition signing lottery where the winner receives a million Musk-buckos.
