It’s the free, second annual Sunset Cliffs Auto Show coming to Point Loma Avenue on Saturday, Sept. 7, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Organizers expect 80 to 100 vehicles on display. Event founder Gavin Fleming of OB claimed:
“We’ve got everything from vehicles from 1910 to a new luxury Rolls Royce as well as trucks, motorcycles, and cars of all types. We’ve added more cars and a kids zone with Hot Wheels racing this year, and we’ll also be having food trucks, some merchandise vendors, and live music.”
Fleming also stated:
“We host the show to benefit the community. Come on out and help us fundraise, bring awareness to Sunset Cliffs. This is the only event held right there.”
“Every time we get an entry we get real excited. We’ll be taking over Point Loma Avenue, the entire street not just the parking lots.”
Vehicles on display for the Sept. 7 show will also be judged according to categories.
Fleming expects that as many as 2,000 car lovers will visit this year’s event, which he said will also feature a raffle and some “giveaways of fun stuff.”
Fleming is the hotel manager at Inn at Sunset Cliffs.

Don’t know how others feel but I worry about bringing any more “awareness” to Sunset Cliffs. Sorry, but just had to say this even though I love classic cars.

Ya I hate to say it, but I agree. Especially with events that tend to skew towards people who drive loud and polluting (pre-smog!) vehicles through our residential streets.
There are so few pre-smog cars in regular use. Honestly they should all be exempt if under 1,000 miler per year. It’s a healthy hobby, it’s inclusive to all ages, income levels, and physical conditions. State law require cars 1976 or later to be smogged until the end of time, whether they drive 1 mile or ten thousand miles. And now those inspections cost more than for the new cars.
It is a reasonably healthy activity depending on you go about it. I was a tank mechanic in the army and still wrench on my own vehicles quite a bit. Rusty jagged metal, pinching fingers in tight spaces, and the disgusting fluids that work in great quantities on these old beasts are some of the more obvious hazards. Used motor oil is especially bad to be on bare skin. Then you have the impact on the climate and other people’s health.
I still enjoy driving my 1972 Chevy pickup around town, but I do feel bad there is no catalytic converter even though it runs clean and doesn’t burn much oil. Still 9.5 mpg though. The sad thing is new trucks are quite a bit larger, abundant, and only get a few more mpg. I guess that makes sense since the U.S. is currently the number one oil producing nation in the history of the world ever.
80 to 100 cars and 20 people show up.
