ADUs! They’re Everywhere in San Diego. Here’s a Sampling

As many know, the OB Rag is sponsoring a “Worst ADU in San Diego” contest.

Here’s just a sampling of some of the dozens of entries we’ve received. Have you seen them?

College Area: Front-yard ADU towers over next-door neighbor — looks like Dorothy’s house landing in Oz!
El Cerrito: Five 2-story buildings behind the original home that was already partitioned into mini-dorms. Could be as many as 12 units. Doesn’t look like any on-site parking.

Normal Heights: This was featured in a Channel 8 news report. Two-story, 630 square ft, 28 ft tall, built at ZERO property line, 17.5 inches from neighbor’s fireplace.
North Park: Bad enough this entire house was jammed into a small lot and pressed up against neighbors’ property lines. Do they have to add insult to injury with the “We Can Build Yours Too!” ADU sign?
Logan Heights: Jarring height and architectural style, excessive front yard paving, lot line to lot line.
Torrey Hills: Excessively large, sits in front yard of owner’s lot on a cul-de-sac, made neighbors remove row of green hedges to put up concrete wall; project has filled up driveway so owners park their four large vehicles on the street.

  1. The top one in “the College area” is on Joan Ct. that front “unit” is a single one3, in the front yard, infront of the existing house and garage. It has no parking. Meanwhile, additional ones are being built on Defiance, and goes along with the trend of making every single unit on Baja /54th/ Prosperity/Faber/ Campanile, minidorms and 4 or more unit complexes. I’ll add in a high fire zone with the only escape routes being a 20% grade up 54th to Collier or up 54th to Montezuma at a 14% grade, or up Campanile (speed bumps on Baja) of 13%. Brush all around, and high density. Having a fire in there would be a disaster,. Did our lovely city council take that into consideration before the let developers buy up everything, and add 2nd stories and backyard apartments to EVERY property??
Boy, that Measure B thing is going to be fun. Different trash companies picking up trash bins at these 8, 12, 10 unit complexes that dot 54th, Baja, etc, since the City won’t be servicing them anymore,. Where will the bins go, with limited space out front for actual bin storage for all these trash collection companies that these developers will have to hire once Measure B takes effect?
