Another Radiation Leak Involving San Onofre Nuke and a 47-Day Delay in Notifying the Public — Virtual Meeting, Thursday, Sept.5

Charles Langley, the Executive Director of Public Watchdogs is warning the public that once again, Southern California Edison is in radioactively “hot” water about another radiation leak involving the failed San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS). Langley is urging the public to learn about this shocking development this Thursday afternoon, Sept. 5th at an Edison-sponsored virtual meeting from 2pm to 5pm, September 5 (meeting details here).

Langley writes:

About the radiation leak:

The leak occurred during the transport of a 100-ton, thirty-seven foot high, “pressurizer.” Edison has claimed that the leak is below “background” radiation. A railroad worker in San Bernardino discovered the leak on or around June 30, during the pressurizer’s long journey from San Onofre to a disposal site in Clive Utah.

None of the newspaper reports mention the date, but Public Watchdogs did some digging and found out that the leak was reported on June 30, according to the hard-to-find NRC EVENT REPORT filed with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

The San Diego Union Tribune has covered the story, as well as the pro-nuclear Orange County Register, which has portrayed the event as inconsequential, claiming that surveys found no “detectable level of radioactivity …”

So once again there has been a “leak.” And just like the leak that shut down San Onofre for good, Edison withheld the story for 47-days before it notified the public.

Why the 47-day wait to notify the public? Was it because they wanted more time for the radiation fade away? Did they need more time to get their public relations story together?

I urge you to attend this meeting on Thursday. Now more than ever, we need your help in holding Edison accountable.

I hope to “see” you there at this virtual meeting (remember, it starts at 2:00pm in the afternoon, not in the evening).
