Numerous groups oppose Measure C on November’s ballot, not only Keep the Coast30. Here’s a recent Op-Ed in the Presidio Sentinel from the group “Save San Diego’s Character”:
Save San Diego’s Character, an organization created in response to the U.S. Navy’s proposal to redevelop the NAVWAR/SPAWAR site, opposes San Diego County Measure C. This Measure would remove the 30-foot height limit on construction in the Midway-Pacific Highway Community Plan area. It would affect approximately 1,300 acres stretching from Interstate 8 south along Interstate 5 to the San Diego International Airport currently included in the Coastal Zone of the City of San Diego.
Save San Diego’s Character opposes the Measure because it would allow developers to build whatever they want without the current height restrictions. It will also lead to the following:
- This could mean high-rise buildings that would significantly increase the density of the region by upward of a half a million new residents.
- The increase in population would result in extremely elevated traffic that would restrict and constrict driving to downtown for work and entertainment, including Petco Park, and access to the airport.
- Traffic patterns would also be affected for residents east of Interstate 5 wishing to travel to the beach communities.
- With an increase in population would also come a commensurate increase in use of resources such as limited energy and water.
- More residents means more demands on infra-structure and services, such as police, fire hospitals and other community services.
- In addition, Measure C does not provide for additional parks or other family-oriented recreational facilities in the coastal region.
Save San Diego’s Character strongly recommends a NO vote on Measure C in the November 8 election. Save San Diego’s Character does support redevelopment of the Midway District exclusively, which could be done without Measure C.

What I find most interesting is that this makes at least four official groups speaking out against Measure C, but other than from those standing to make money off it passing, crickets — except for deceptive campaign mailers.

Save San Diego’s Character makes a lot of good points that voters should consider and vote No on C. It is great that all these groups opposing C are exposing the problems that will be caused if the 3o-Foot Height Limit is broken. Tell your friends to read the OB Rag to find out more!
Save our Access is the group that challenged the previous vote in the courts. It appears that they have filed again regarding the latest environmental determination. I am not involved with the group, but it can be said that it does not seem to rely on city processes. It is a a legal nonprofit. I don’t know about the others. Some group needs to mail those pesky postcards to the rest of the city and I do not know who is taking that approach.
nostalgic – The Rag and the group we’re involved in keepthecoast30 have distanced ourselves from Save our access because they have saddled up to Carl DeMaio, the election denier and the most trumpieist of local Republicans.
San Diego desperately needs more housing and more density. I really hope Measure C passes and more dense walkable neighborhoods are built outside of just Downtown
Measure C doesn’t affect downtown. We need more affordable housing, not just “more housing.” Nothing about Measure C guarantees affordable housing. But whatever is built will have to deal with the current King Tides plus the flooding from the melting of glaciers.
Nah mate, you need more housing. The more housing there is the less it costs at the margin. You want affordable housing you can’t sit in your current car dependent sprawl and get say the world is going to flood from climate change. You need more dense mixed use construction to enable people not to own cars and enable more public transit. You need more mixed used dense housing to lower the average rent for everyone by providing enough supply where people want to live to prevent them from driving their pick up truck from Santee to visit the beach and poisoning the climate in the process. But hey, maybe I’m wrong, maybe you can explain how building more housing won’t, in aggregate lower not just cost housing but also the cost of living.
Well, hey mate, check out the housing ads in the U-T every Sunday: San Diego has plenty of housing – but they’re not affordable. We have an affordable housing crisis, not a housing crisis.
The demand for the good is reflected in it’s price. As the current demand for houses exceeds it’s current supply the free floating price moves up. The fact that SOME houses are available does not mean that ENOUGH houses are available. If a SURPLUS of houses were available then the price would fall because there would be an imbalance of supply to demand. I sincerely hope you understand this basic point.
The other alternative here is just start charging people a land value tax.
Agree with Frank. There is no housing shortage.
There are plenty of expensive homes and luxury apartments for rent or sale.
There is only an Affordable Housing shortage.
No on Measure C.
