Second Home Fire in Ocean Beach in 3 Days — Family Cat Unable to Be Saved

A second fire in three days broke out in Ocean Beach this week. This one was sparked by a kitchen appliance and heavily damaged an Ocean Beach apartment in the 4900 block of Del Monte Avenue on Thursday. The first fire was late Monday night on the 4700 block of Muir.

Two residents, not at home, were displaced but the family cat was unable to be saved by first responders.

Firefighters had found a cat inside, stricken by apparent smoke inhalation, and police and medics tried to resuscitate the feline with an oxygen mask and other emergency measures but could not save the animal.

The blaze erupted at about 7 a.m. Thursday, the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department said.

The blaze heavily damaged the kitchen of the residence and caused heavy smoke damage throughout the unit, SDFRD Battalion Chief Jeff Phillips told OnSceneTV.

The American Red Cross was called in to help the people who live in the apartment arrange for emergency shelter. Times of San Diego
