Part 2

For those of you that did not read “Who Is Linda Lukacs, Part I,” let me briefly state that she is running for City Council Seat, District 2, against Jen Campbell, the incumbent.  I voted for Dr. Campbell when she was elected because I felt she was the best for the job – and the fact that she was a Democrat did not sway me in my decision. After all, I am a registered Democrat.  However, I would not vote for her again because I feel that she does not have the people’s best interests in mind.  In fact, as far as I am concerned, she did virtually nothing while in office, even to the part of not showing up for a recent debate.

On the other hand, Linda is a registered Republican and even though the Council seat is supposed to be non-partisan, I wanted to know Linda’s philosophy and how she would handle the office if she were elected.  In Part I we went over many of the items on her platform, and I presented them to the readership. We spent over 3 hours discussing those questions. In Part II are questions that others asked me following the publication of my article. I gave them to Linda and she graciously agreed to answering them, in spite of a very busy schedule.

She has requested that the answers not be modified or edited, so they appear just as she answered them for the community. Here are Linda Lukacs’ responses:

The position of San Diego City Councilmember is non-partisan and focused on local government. I am not a career politician, I am a dentist, an educator, a former nurse and a small business owner. I have no interest in seeking partisan office or climbing the political ladder. My only agenda is to provide effective representation for our community and enhance our quality of life. My Council office will be active, visible and responsive to all residents and focus on solving constituent issues.

It is well past time to address our current realities of homelessness, public safety, failing infrastructure, environmental protection and the numerous other issues that are affecting our quality of life. We can do better. These commonalities and shared responsibilities are nonpartisan issues and they affect us all. We need to work together to establish our plan for success, to support our small businesses and our police, to help our neighbors and community thrive, and to prepare this District for future generations. We must foster, maintain and develop all that is unique and special about this wonderful community.

I was raised to be an independent thinker and I try to be true to that principle. When it came to voting my family respectfully encouraged that one should “choose the best candidate for the job.” I have always voted for the person and not the party. That is how I hope we all would vote. We must respect each other”s views, opinions and political choices and remember that we have a common goal: we’re in this together, we need to do this together, to help each other and find
common ground if we are to succeed. I believe that we can and will.

Question 1) Personal views on a women’s right to choose:

I support a woman”s right to choose,” which is protected under California law. We are a nation and populace of great diversity in culture, religion, philosophy and law tempered and guided by evolving academic, ethical, practical and medical realities. I respect and appreciate that the issue of abortion is deeply personal. Life is a gift to be cherished and I appreciate that there are very real circumstances where a woman should have a right of say, solely and/or with partner.

Q2) Do you believe that Biden won the election?

Yes. It is now August of 2022. Joe Biden has been declared our elected President for more than 1½ years and it is time for all of us to move on and look to the future.

Q3) Is there a Republican in San Diego that you would like to emulate?

There are current and former elected officials from both political parties who contributed greatly to our city.

I appreciate former Councilman/Mayor Kevin Faulconer”s passage of the first Climate Action Plan for the City of San Diego and his longtime and consistent commitment to anti-discrimination efforts and LBGTQ rights.

I appreciate City Councilman Chris Cate”s emphasis on public safety and efforts to increase the number of police officers on the streets of our city as well as his record of fiscal responsibility and tax reform.

I appreciate former Democratic Councilman and current Congressman Scott Peters”efforts to help local small businesses and create jobs and economic growth in San Diego.

If I am honored to be elected to serve the people of this district, I look forward to working with everyone in local government regardless of party, to promote practical, equitable and fiscally responsible solutions to deal with public safety, homelessness, environmental protection, infrastructure improvement and preserving the character of our City”s neighborhoods, among other issues.

Q4) What Republicans do you look up to?

My political hero is Abraham Lincoln. He led our nation through some of the most difficult and challenging of times. A brilliant mind and speaker. He guided the nation away from slavery, motivated more by heart and ethical responsibility rather than convenience of political aspiration. He sought to restore a divided nation, courageously and compassionately. He ultimately paid with his life for his ideals.

At the same time, my heroes also include Democratic presidents like John F. Kennedy who provided common sense, strong judgment and inspirational leadership for our entire nation.

Q5) How do you feel about Trump?

I am focused on the future, preserving and improving our quality of life here in San Diego. That is what this campaign is about. As for my feelings regarding Trump, I am hopeful 2024 will introduce 2 major party candidates that are committed to bringing our country together. I am very committed to serving our District; to being present and active in our communities, to show up, to listen, to represent this you, and to protect and enhance this beautiful place we are so lucky to call home.

I want to hear from you. That’s the only way I can be the best possible Councilmember for this District and its residents. Please contact me at linda@lindalukacs.com  if you would like to share your concerns, ideas and suggestions about our community. Thank you

Back to me, Judi, in closing, I think we have a winner on the ballot; someone that really will put her money where her mouth is.  I personally think that the improvement with Linda sitting in the District 2 chair will be phenomenal.  Let’s get behind her – not necessarily as “Democrats for Linda”; not necessarily as “ABC” (Anybody But Campbell) but as the best candidate to represent District 2.

And even if we do not agree with her on all areas, I truly think she will listen to her constituents before making her decisions.  She will get things done.

You now have a comparison between Linda Lukacs and Jen Campbell. Vote for the one that you think will represent us the best way. Sometimes the “unknown” is much better than the “known.”

I believe that I need to clarify the “Part II ” aspect of this interview.
I had written the original article and thought it was finished. Linda answered all of the questions that I had regarding this particular community. However when I sent it to my Publisher, he felt it would be important to know where Linda stood on other areas and subsequently additional questions were raised by others. I asked Linda if she would answer those questions, and she did so very willingly with the caveat that there would be no changes to what she wrote. I have to tell you that when I met with her her focus was strictly on what is happening to us in district 2. Please do not judge what she will do based on the National answers. That was not her focus and nor was it mine when I interviewed her.

I hope Linda is prepared for Jen Campbell and the mayor’s club to absolutely smear her based on national party politics. I doubt Campbell will even broach any local issues, which last I checked is what this job is about.

Ate D2 voters capable of judging the two candidates based on how they have/will represent D2’s interests at the city level? or will they blindly follow the party line and junk mail campaign? The Campbell campaign thinks it’s the latter, and that competing for votes based on the issues is a waste of her time – This is why she has rejected invites to past and future community debates. She attended one early on and it wasn’t good.

Well then, get out an actively support Linda’s campaign. It’s the only way we are going to get rid of Jenn.

Judi …. great column as always.
I might have asked her why she would retain her party loyalty to the Republican brand when the Republican brand is owned 100% by Trump.
Can one really be a non-Trumper and still be a Republican ? When does one quit a party when it is taken over by a lunatic ?

Reply

Frank Gormlie August 4, 2022 at 3:39 pm

Seems people like her and Liz Cheney prove that the GOP “brand” has not been completely taken over by trumpists.

I don’t see where she has “proven” anything…did I miss something?

Yeah, I echo Gilbert. Why be a registered GOP and not an independent? Comparing this woman to Liz Cheney, as stand-outs for some other form of GOP? No. Cheney did an outstanding job on the 1/6 committee, kudos, but she is still registered with the party. Until something really remarkable occurs w/in the GOP, you’re either in and supportive, or you aren’t. I’m not wild about Yang’s proposal of the Forward Party, a whole other subject, but I long for a multiple party system, and until politicians are willing to stand on their own, or form fusion parties (see the late 1800s), I’m not subscribing to any GOP. This is local politics, she’s a dentist who wants to contribute to local issues. Shed the GOP cloak, and when asked about a national context, don’t demure.

Reply

kh August 4, 2022 at 10:55 pm

Well, until then, there are only 2 parties with any funding or organization. I don’t like it, but the system is ingrained in every state and national contest. And if you want a say in either, you generally have to register. Should reasonable people surrender a party because some traitorous blowhard has damaged it? No, these are the very people needed to overcome and restore it.

At the city level, we also have 2 parties. Those who serve special interests, and those who serve the citizens. Which are you voting for?

Reply

retired botanist August 5, 2022 at 4:44 am

kh, I’ve been voting for 50 yrs, and I’ve always been registered as a non-partisan voter. There are of course differences in each state with regard to which elections an independent voter (not Independent Party) can vote. I’ve always tried to vote for the individual rather than the party, but the two party domination (and the GOP) has increasingly shackled voters like me into having to choose, e.g., the lesser of 2 evils, or being branded as ‘spoilers’, or being excluded from primaries, and so on. All politicians serve special interests, whether they also serve citizens or not. Its just a question of which interests. And TFG is not the only one responsible for the appalling ideology of the GOP… :-)

What does she have to do, or say to convince you that she is an acceptable replacement for Campbell?

Reply

James B Bryant August 6, 2022 at 3:41 pm

Retired Navy Captain and businessman. This is local politics, Trump is not going to influence it and she is clearly not a Trumper. I met with Jen once at a meet and greet and she told me that she couldn’t help me because of a strong mayor type of government, she would not pick up the phone and call a city employee and ask a question.
Over several years I asked her staff for a meeting with Jen and they blocked me. I worked with many politicians, local and state, as I owned a regulated business for 20 years. I was never refused a meeting, something is wrong with Jen.
I told Jen at a free concert that I was unhappy and contact me, she has not.

I truly don’t trust any politician anymore, but absolutely refuse to give up my voting rights. My son is a veteran and we all know what they’re fighting for ultimately.

Being a registered Democrat has definitely colored whom I vote for. I can’t stand what the GOP stands for in general.

It is difficult for me to move beyond the fact that this is a non partisan office. Lukacs still believes in the rhetoric the GOP espouses and I feel it may ultimately color her decisions when it comes to D2. Yet I truly despise Campbell who talks out of both sides of her mouth.

The is going to be a really hard conundrum for me to overcome.

I’d love to see Jen get the boot, but I can’t vote Republican. I know this is a “non-partisan” office but that’s a technicality. And I don’t want to launch a Republican’s political career. Pre-Trump, I probably would have more seriously considered her candidacy. But today I just can’t.

Do you believe all republicans are inherently supportive of Trump’s destructive bullshit? I’ll have to disagree with that. Sometimes you have to look beyond labels.

RE: Your question about Trump and her answer – which was way too coy and decidedly sounded like a Trumper trying to hide the fact.

Anyway, even with this and the likelihood that once elected to public office, people tend to like the taste of power and seek higher office (which would or might probably then be as a [ugh!] Trump Republican), we’ve GOT to kick Jen Campbell to the curb and move on!

Because any person who voted for and supported t-rump is not a person to be trusted. I asked Lukacs directly if she voted for him and if she still supports him. I heard crickets.

Because it’s a total mindset and you should be very cognizant of that. Non partisan position or not. Anyone who believes he didn’t lose the election and didn’t incite an insurrection….I can’t tolerate the decisions they might make that will affect our community if they support that other unpatriotic b.s.

HERE’S THE MESSAGE I GOT IN RESPONSE TO AN EMAIL I MANGED TO GET DIRECTLY TO HER, which I was relieved to get because JEN CAMPBELL HAS GOT TO GO!
From: Linda Lukacs
Sent: Tuesday, October 18, 2022 8:35 AM

Hi Joe and good morning, Thanks again for your email and your question. Please don’t be fooled by Campbell’s attack ads labeling me as a right wing extremist. Her flyers are false, insulting and disparaging.
I am pro choice, pro environment and pro truth.
I do not support Trump.
I’ve held held a press conference and have appeared on our local TV news to denounce Campbell’s attack. My answer to the OB Rag question was a sincere answer and that I believe both parties have to do much better at putting forth candidates that are representative of the role of POTUS and will work towards uniting us. It is the only way we will move forward successfully.
I hope this helps. Linda

Let’s see if she answers my direct question about whether or not she voted for t-rump. Being against him now is a bandwagon with lots of room, I want to know what she did in 2016.

Reply

kh October 18, 2022 at 12:50 pm

And what’s the point of that? If Linda voted for Trump in 2016 you’re going to put your trust in Campbell instead? You know better.

I don’t trust any of them. But I know what I’m getting now and it’s someone who only seems to put in the effort when it’s opposite our interests. An empty seat would be a better advocate than that, but that’s not on the ballot.

Trump was a wildcard in 2016, so I won’t judge anyone who voted for him then. 2020 was a different story, although even then many had legitimate reasons to support his policies more than the alternative, and could’ve assumed his preemptive election-denying statements were just bluster. I was hoping the margin would be far enough apart that it wouldn’t ger any oxygen.

We aren’t picking friends or marriage partners here, and we aren’t picking horses. We’re picking which 1 of 2 persons will put our community in the least worst position 4 years from now. And it’s anonymous, nobody will know who you voted for. So vote wisely and don’t worry about being labeled.

Reply

Geoff Page October 18, 2022 at 1:11 pm

No, I have already stated my intention of writing in Lori Saldaña, I have no use for Campbell. But, I also have no use for any person who voted for t-rump in 2016.

I have a few years on you and I will say, even after experiencing Nixon and GWB, I still never looked at politics as black and white. But, t-rump made it perfectly clear what a miserable excuse for a human being he was by denigrating everyone except people like him. Anyone who voted for him cannot ever say they were fooled as were the voters for Nixon and GWB. t-rump voters knew exactly who they were voting for. That is now black and white for me. Lukacs has had every opportunity to say if she voted for him or not and hasn’t. That’s enough for me.

Wow ” I also have no use for any person who voted for t-rump in 2016″ that a very interesting statment that sterotypes alot of people . Just thought you should be aware of this . Maybe a more thoughtful comment should be in place . I understand your intentions . Kind of a cotradiction of the rest of the statment you had . Please think about this .

Correction ” Kind of a contradiction of the rest of the statement you had ” My spelling is horrible . LOL . But also the Interesting smear hate campaign that Jen had against Lori was not Ethical and not very nice . Promoting Linda thru horrible mialers ( Via JENS campaign )was very un Ethical . Well 4 more years of Jen is the question , I hope that Change in Leadership on the Politcal landscape is in the Wind . In response to Joe De La Rosa’s comment: I just hope it’s not too little, too late. Months ago I urged Linda to come out and make the statements she made in today’s email to Mr. De LA Rosa, in order to pre-empt the attacks everyone knew were coming. I’m afraid that her failure to do so will cost her the election. I hope I’m wrong.

Reply

kh October 18, 2022 at 12:55 pm

I disagree. Is she loses it’ll be mostly for having no money to campaign, and being up against an incumbent, and on the wrong side of party voter registration despite it being quite irrelevant at this level. She could be Liz Cheney herself and the situation would be exactly the same.

The only reason she’s even in the general election is because of dirty money from Todd Gloria’s PAC.

Reply

Craig Klein October 18, 2022 at 1:14 pm

Well, it certainly wouldn’t hurt her chances if all of us disgruntled Democrats voted for her.

Reply

Geoff Page October 18, 2022 at 1:18 pm

Lukacs only raised $12,000 for her campaign but a PAC spent $150,000 on her. Ask yourselves, does that look like a serious candidate? How many slick mailers has anyone received pushing Lukacs? I haven’t.

No, she was in there to drain votes away from Lori Saldaña, ensuring that Campbell had no real competition in the election. The result is a forgone conclusion.

And the nostalgic recharacterizations of Zapf just have to stop. District 2 has been plagued by the worst kinds of politicians for years and we then elected one mayor. We have seen the enemy and he is us.

Reply

kh October 18, 2022 at 3:22 pm

Well you nailed it on the last one.

Whether or not Lukacs was put there for that purpose we may never know. But certainly she has been used as such by the “morally superior” Democrat groups.

She is a serious candidate in that she has spent a lot of time meeting community members and going door to door. She is sincere, and has shown an appetite to listen and learn. Whether that actually translates to any votes, is another story.

Reply

JIM BRYANT October 18, 2022 at 5:05 pm

I agree, at least she meets with voters. Jen’s staff blocked my attempt to meet with her. I met Jen at a concert asked her to contact me, I was ignored.
