Today – Wednesday. May 8th there’s a Speak-Out and Singalong called “No Housing, No Choice!” Newport Ave. & Abbott St. in Ocean Beach. There will be participation by the Light Brigade and Drum Circle.

Hosted by the San Diego Housing Emergency Alliance, the event begins at 5pm and runs to 8pm. It’s all about the true stories of people forced to use their vehicles for shelter.

Organizers are asking folks to join the event. They say PARKING IS TIGHT, so they’re asking people to meet at Robb Field, 2525 Bacon Street, between 3-4:30 pm to shuttle to the event. The return shuttle goes from 6:30-8:15 pm  More info:

The people who are forced to use their vehicles for shelter are not criminals. Rather, they are people with disabilities and seniors on fixed income, and low income families — all victims of San Diego’s skyrocketing rents.

They say:

We don’t need a new Vehicle Habitation Ordinance. Instead, we need to create permanent, low-income housing opportunities. Please Join Us!

5pm Speak-Out
6pm Singalong

(KGTV) — Wednesday, San Diegans who live in their cars rallied in Ocean Beach to press the city to allow living in vehicles, as residents in various neighborhoods pressure the city to ban the policy once again. https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/supporters-rally-in-ocean-beach-to-keep-vehicle-habitation-policy-in-place

Fox5: About 30 people gathered near the Ocean Beach pier Wednesday to voice their concerns about the city’s proposed Vehicle Habitation Ordinance.

The ordinance would make it illegal to live in a vehicle between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. and anywhere within 500 feet of a school or housing at any time. Cars would also not be allowed to have any evidence of cooking, bathing or sleeping materials.

The demonstration was used as a way for people to share their personal experiences about living in their cars or recreational vehicles.

“I have become used to living in my car. I don’t see a way out. Now the City of San Diego wants to put cops on people living in their cars,” a man named Christopher told FOX 5. The ordinance will be debated and voted on by the San Diego City Council in the near future. https://fox5sandiego.com/2019/05/08/homeless-advocates-speak-out-against-citys-proposed-vehicle-habitation-ordinance/

Not sure that living in parking lots at beach areas or in residential communities is the right way to go, but parking is abundant at SDCCU Stadium, at under-utilized shopping mall lots in Mission Valley area, Grossmont Center, Santee Towne Centre etc. Plus there’s access to bike trails, hiking, restaurants, shopping, movies, vehicle repair, laundry facilities, etc.
When considered, East County really is a gold mine for travelers of all kinds and should be heralded as a reasonable and viable destination for everyone!
