Restaurant Review

I reviewed the Ketch just after it opened for another publication and said at the time that if it was not good, or just mediocre – and I would not do a review of it, because I felt they needed some time to get everything together. However, it turned out it was very good, and I wrote the review.

The other day I had the opportunity to go back to the Ketch with a new friend, and, again I was not disappointed in the food. What I was disappointed about was that the menu had changed, and the item that I wanted was gone. Hugh said that he really liked Calamari, and on the menu was a “Calamari & Peppers” item.

A new store review

by Bob Edwards

For many years it has been the conventional wisdom that independent bookstores are dying out – some say murdered – by the growth of Amazon and megastores like Costco. Walmart, and Target all of whom offer bestsellers at steeply discounted prices. According to a report on NPR, the number of independent booksellers in the United States fell 40 percent in the five years after Amazon opened in 1995. With the introduction of Kindle and other e-readers in 2007, more brick and mortar bookstores closed.

Ocean Beach suffered the loss of bookstores, new and used, during those years. In fact, other than limited selections of best sellers at local drug store chains and the small but intriguing book section at the Black on Newport (which specializes in counter-cultural, music, and graphic books), there has been no place to buy new books in OB.

Frank Gormlie  October 11, 2018  14 Comments on Reader Explodes ‘Bombshell’ on Latest Developments of Notorious Ebers Project in Ocean Beach

The San Diego Reader – in today’s cover story – exploded a bombshell of news about the latest developments to the continuing saga of the project at Ebers and Greene in northeast Ocean Beach. Dave Rice meticulously pieced together the entire story and history of the project and explained in detail all the financing of the project and all of its unraveling.

At the end of his story, Rice explains how finally a prominent Los Angeles area businessman who created a bakery mini-empire, bought the property for $925,000. And the new owner has a new contractor with new plans and new permits to finish the project – as a single family home. Plus, the new owner has NO plans to bring his project before the Ocean Beach Planning Board.

North Chapel Preservationists Are Ringing the Bell – McMillin Has Leased Site and ‘Remodel’ Begins in New Year

Frank Gormlie  October 11, 2018  4 Comments on North Chapel Preservationists Are Ringing the Bell – McMillin Has Leased Site and ‘Remodel’ Begins in New Year

Remember the North Chapel at Liberty Station? There was a fight to save it because McMillin & Company wanted to remodel the interior and find a long-term commercial tenant to come in – like a possible restaurant. In response, a group formed – Save the North Chapel – a petition was launched and a community galvanized.

Then back at the beginning of the summer near the end of June, Councilwoman Zapf – in the midst of a re-election battle – appeared to negotiate “a reprieve” and the original announced closure date of June 30 was dropped and the chapel was given 6-months.

Well, as that 6 month deadline approacheth,

By Donna Frye

Last week I officially endorsed Vivian Moreno to serve as the next Council District 8 City Councilmember. Vivian is someone who has strong core beliefs and values that will not change based on politics. She is honest and straightforward- she tells it like it is and I appreciate that.

Vivian and I agree about what it takes to be a public servant. It means listening to others with an open mind….

Global Warming

By Meteor Blades / Daily Kos

A decade, maybe a little more, is all the time we have left for acting to keep global temperature rise to no more than 1.5 degrees Celsius over the pre-industrial era, U.N. scientists on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change announced Monday. That’s 2.7 degrees Fahrenheit. Since the dawn of the industrial age, global warming has boosted temperatures 1.0-1.2 degrees Celsius.

The good news from the scientists is that the 1.5-degree goal may still be attainable. That’s unlike what most scientists thought when the 2015 Paris climate agreement included 1.5 degrees as an “aspirational” goal.

‘I Used to Like the FBI and Local Bus Service’

The Old Broad Sounds Off

As we get older, things that we believed in once – Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy – lose their authenticity. There are so many things that I used to believe in that I no longer believe in now. I ceased believing in our Presidential elections when the election was stolen from Al Gore; that feeling was only intensified with the election of the current president. I used to teach how important it was to vote; that each person’s vote counted until it was shown to be a misnomer with the electoral college. I have had to do some changes in my own philosophy and beliefs.

But there was still one governmental agency I believed in up until the last presidential election. I believed in the FBI.
