That’s right, my daughter just gave birth last night to a baby boy.

So, I won’t be able to post any articles until later today.

The “Villa Famosa” project proposed for a large lot right off Famosa Slough is coming up for review. And that review by the Project Review Committee of the Peninsula Planning Board is happening Thursday, November 9, at 1:30 PM, at the Loma Riviera Clubhouse, 3115 Loma Riviera Drive.

Sometimes people celebrating their birthday want to just forget about it; others want it to go on for a few extra days. My friend Mary is one of the latter people, and, after celebrating her birthday Saturday night at another restaurant, she decided it would be fun to celebrate again at BO-beau’s in Ocean Beach.

It started out as a frustrating experience because when I called to make a reservation I was told that they didn’t take reservations but I could be placed on a “waiting list” and would be called as soon as our 6:30pm table was available. (Their menu on-line encourages you to make a reservation.)

Many in Ocean Beach view the ocean and sand as the “front” of the community, the waterfront, the front yard of the house of OB that gets a lot of attention. And if that is the view to take, then OB has a huge “side yard” that it often ignores.

‘Feeding The Hungry’ Ministry Celebrates Its 10th Year

Every other Tuesday for more than ten years, Feeding The Hungry Ministry on Sunset Cliffs Blvd. in Ocean Beach has welcomed seniors, low income, disabled, and homeless people of our community to a free, nutritious, and tasty meal. A ministry of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the all volunteer staff serves 80 to 180 people at each meal.

“The turnout varies, depending on the time of the month,” according to Jack Hamlin who has been volunteering and helping organize the program for about seven years

Fear and loathing in the classroom? Not exactly, but things aren’t that great either. According to a new study released last week by my union, the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), and the advocacy group the Badass Teachers Association (BAT), educators are feeling significantly more stressed these days.

As Education Week reports, “The survey found that educators find work to be stressful 61 percent of the time—and nearly a quarter of respondents said work was ‘always’ stressful. Meanwhile, workers in the general population report that work is stressful 30 percent of the time.”

Well-known local OBcean, Mercy Baron, has just been chosen to be a Top 10 Judge at the 6th Annual World Food Championships. It’s touted as the “largest Food Sport tournament in history” with over a thousand contestants and hundreds of teams. Last year, they say, 20,000 foodies watched.

The WFC claims :

“… it has given birth to ‘Food Sport’ by providing a level playing field, a fair judging system, a creative culinary fest, and a process that allows the culinary elite to show their chops and earn the respect they deserve.”

The Championships will be held in Orange Beach, Alabama in less than a week. And Mercy told me she’s the only one going to this prestigious event from San Diego.

Just how did this happen?

A new sign at OB’s Dog Beach warns people and dogs to “check in before you get in”. It’s all an effort by the County’s Department of Environmental Health to have swimmers and surfers and dog owners to get the very latest on the status of coastal water quality.

A little after 2pm on Thursday, November 2nd, a Notice of Abatement was attached to the abandoned building at Ebers and Greene streets by the City of San Diego.

Addressed to Nelco Properties, LLC, it notified the owner at 2269 Ebers that representatives of the City’s Code Enforcement Division and the Development Services Department had inspected the property on October 17th and had found it to be a vacate building with graffiti and lots of trash. The inspectors found enough threats on the property to the public ‘s health and safety that they declared it to be a public nuisance pursuit to a number of Municipal and State codes.

The Notice requires “immediate actions” and gives Nelco Properties until November 17th to clean up the site and secure all the openings on the building.
