In all my years of reviewing restaurants, I have never come across a true Guamanian restaurant, food from the island of Guam, an island that’s been in the news of late.

Guahan Grill is a family run, Chamorro restaurant. In fact, one of our servers – Wilma – was born on the island of Taipei , just off the coast of Guam. Christine, our other server, has never been to Guam.

Their menu states:

Following the Lead of the Liars: How Conservatives Are Winning Their War on Reality

Jim Miller  August 28, 2017  8 Comments on Following the Lead of the Liars: How Conservatives Are Winning Their War on Reality

By Jim Miller

Nothing about the Trump-driven spectacle of the last few weeks should be shocking if you have been paying the slightest amount of attention to American politics.

It’s been an obvious fact for years that Trump is a racist and has done everything he can to stoke the ugliest aspects of the American political imagination. It was disgustingly clear when he led a campaign designed to “other” the first African American president of the United States by absurdly questioning his citizenship, and it was also evident in his very productive use of our long history of anti-immigrant fervor and xenophobia during and after his campaign for the presidency.

A few changes under way at Pacific Shores

By South OB Girl

It is official folks — Pacific Shores on Newport Avenue has spruced up its exterior.

After celebrating its 75th Anniversary in December 2016, the 3 quarter of a century old establishment decided to freshen up the paint and is planning to return to the original building design with a window in the front.

I recently met with bar manager Jack Panighetti who gave me a tour of what everybody calls “Pac Shores”.

Here’s a Run Down of the Candidates for D2

Long-time OBcean Jim Bell publicly announced his candidacy for the District 2 City Council race at the OB Town Council meeting Wednesday, August 23rd.

Jim, a veteran of prior council primaries, is a well-known environmental figure about town, and usually runs in the Green Party. Just for starters, he helped design the building’s architecture for OB People’s Co-op Market.

Bell joins a race that’s getting somewhat crowded on the non-Republican side of the fence – but a race where the incumbent, Lorie Zapf – the Republican – holds a substantial fundraising lead over her opponents.

By Edward Sifuentes / ACLU San Diego

A coalition of community-based organizations gathered on Wednesday in front of City Hall to express their disappointment in Mayor Faulconer’s flawed plan to select our next chief of police. Specifically, the group called on the mayor to do away with a proposal for a secret selection panel and asked for additional community forums in Districts 8 and 9.

In attendance were representatives of Alliance San Diego, Earl B. Gilliam Bar Association, San Diego La Raza Lawyers Association, San Diego Organizing Project, Mid-City CAN, Center on Policy Initiatives, The San Diego LGBT Community Center, and Community Assistance Support Team, and the ACLU of San Diego and Imperial Counties.

Oppose San Diego Border Wall and Divest

Source  August 25, 2017  0 Comments on Oppose San Diego Border Wall and Divest

By Kilian Colin, Member of the Committee for Better Banks

The resolution recently proposed by District 9 Councilwoman Georgette Gomez calls the border area “among the most unique, diverse and beautiful regions in the world,” and the wall plans “offensive and damaging symbols of fear and division that will increase tensions with Mexico.”

She also says the wall would damage the economy and disrupt joint tourism promotions between San Diego and Tijuana.

Target Greeted With Another Full House in Opposition at Ocean Beach Town Council Meeting

Frank Gormlie  August 24, 2017  20 Comments on Target Greeted With Another Full House in Opposition at Ocean Beach Town Council Meeting

Once again, Target representatives were greeted with another full house of OBceans in opposition to their potential move onto Newport Avenue at Wednesday’s, Aug. 23rd, OB Town Council meeting. They faced the same wall of “no’s” at the August 2nd OB Planning Board meeting.

And once again, Target brought to the meeting about a dozen of its employees who took up several rows in the front – this is the same thing they did on August 2nd. Target had two representatives who spoke,

Dear Readers: Help Me Deal With the Cat from Hell

By South OB Girl

Have you had a cat from hell? Readers out there — I am guessing many of you have stories of trying to get your misbehaving cat to behave.

I recently met my friend’s cat who is a candidate to work with a real life cat whisperer (if such a thing really exists).

This is a hissing, biting, unfriendly, territorial cat. Consistent and repeat peeing and pooping throughout the house and on the furniture. Whenever and wherever he wants to in the house.

Trump’s Suspension of Obama’s Desegregation Policy Impacts San Diego Housing Vouchers

Source  August 24, 2017  1 Comment on Trump’s Suspension of Obama’s Desegregation Policy Impacts San Diego Housing Vouchers

On August 11, the Department of Housing and Urban Development suspended key components of an Obama Administration rule that addressed growing segregation in the Housing Choice Voucher Program. Only days later, the Trump Administration declared plans to target and dismantle affirmative action in universities.

In an effort to address our nation’s increasing levels of segregation, the Obama Administration implemented a U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Final Rule that changed the way 23 metropolitan areas issued vouchers to low-income tenants.

The goal was simple: improve the health of low-income families by increasing access to areas of lower poverty and higher opportunity.

A brand new facebook page for the “No Target in Ocean Beach” group has just been set up. (As of this writing, already 92 93 people “like” the page – and it literally just went up.) Here it is.

Here is what the facebook page states:

About

OB means community. It means local shops and lively culture. It means flare and it means funky, pride and positive vibes, casual — not corporate. A Target Express on Newport Ave directly threatens what it means to be OB. Join our fight to keep it out.

STORY

Recently, the community of Ocean Beach found out that Target Express intends to open on Newport Avenue, which will directly and detrimentally impact the local economy. We intend to stop it.
