And now it begins. Hate crimes against people of color are exploding across the country – and in San Diego.

On Wednesday, the day after Trump’s election, a Muslim woman wearing a hijab was walking to her car in a parking structure at SDSU. Two males approached her, reportedly made anti-Muslim comments, grabbed her purse and backpack, and apparently stole her car. The suspects were described as a white man and a Latino male.  KPBS

That same KPBS article included a reported about an incident up at UC San Diego at a bus stop, also on Wednesday, where someone had painted a swastika and “Heil Trump” on nearby concrete.

The NBC New York reports:

Hate crimes and other racially tinged incidents, ranging from vandalism to threats to beatings, are being reported across the country in the aftermath of the presidential election. Some of the incidents were reported by police, though many more appeared on social media as anecdotes and not all have been verified.

Most of the recent cases appear to involve graffiti or violence directed at racial or ethnic minorities and in some reports the perpetrators indicated support for Donald Trump.

From CNN:

Fears of heightened bigotry and hate crimes have turned into reality for some Americans after Donald Trump’s presidential win. Racist, pro-Trump graffiti painted inside a high school. A hijab-wearing college student robbed by men talking about Trump and Muslims. While Trump has been accused of fostering xenophobia and Islamophobia, some of his supporters have used his words as justification to carry out hateful acts.

The CNN reported included a video taken by a student during a Michigan middle-school lunch room where white students chant, “Build the wall! Build the wall!” in a hostile way towards minority students.

Muslim women are tweeting about personally experiencing hate comments against them.
