It’s Our Summer Funding Appeal!
Michael Turko – of Turko Files – once called the OB Rag “the conscience of OB“. We love that moniker and wear it with pride.
But you know what?
We’re broke. And we need help right away to keep going.
Even with our shoe-string budget, we do have costs – and occasionally we pay our writers – but right now we have practically run out of operating funds and must turn, as we do once in a while, to our readers, fans and supporters to help us ‘keep it all goin”.
At this point in the middle of July we have to steer our efforts away from being the online citizen journal for Ocean Beach and Point Loma and focus instead on fund-raising.
There’s a whole bunch of posts and articles in the works … like :
- Status Update on Breweries on Newport
- News From OB and Point Loma
- More on Landlord Michael Mills’ OB Empire
- Continue Our Documentation of the Dangers from Sunset Cliffs
- Is the Mission Valley Planning Committee Up to It’s Old Shenanigans?
- Is There a Mountain of Orca Dung Right Off SeaWorld?
- Updates on the New Suspect in Homeless Attacks and on New Victims
But we can’t continue working on them until we’ve received some help – like, immediate help.
Right now, we have about a dozen of supporters who send us monthly donations via PayPal (it’s real easy – the button is right there on our homepage), with anywhere between $3 and $25. But we really need to triple that.
Our goal is to raise $500 from donations this weekend – and $1,000 by the end of next week. Please help us do that.
Of course, our real goal is to continue publishing, to keep providing the uber news for Ocean Beach and the rest of the Peninsula that we’ve been posting, with coverage also of Mission Bay and the other beaches.
We want to continue to:
- Post reports of the various planning committees around the Peninsula, the OB Planning Board, the Peninsula Community Planning Board and the Midway Planning Committee.
- Provide updates and analysis of controversial developments occurring in OB and Point Loma, like the Emerson project, the Froude project, and now the Ebers and Greene project.
But we need help, guys and gals!
Please consider becoming a monthly contributor via PayPal – right there on the homepage. Or make a one-time donation – again, either via PayPal or mail us at:

Minutes after we posted our appeal this morning, we have received our first donation for $10 – thanks Etiwanda Street ! Etiwanda Street is where the original OB Rag began publishing back in 1970.
Our 2nd donation just came in – for $50 – from Del Monte Ave,. with the adviso that we “just don’t spend it on ganga.” Right on, we promise we won’t.
No 4 donation just in: $10 via paypal. No. 3 for $25 – from Tivoli Street.
YOUR RAG WILL IS GOING TO VAPORIZE LIKE ALL TERRORISTS. BUH-BYE LOSERS
I will leave an envelop at the green store. If OB never gets another “tasting room” I will donate more
HA HA HA joking around!
The rag needs to keep going. I hope everyone that reads it will give a few bucks.
TX
Thank you Debbie, appreciate it.
Who is this Jim Landers guy? I’d take his comment like a threat.
Get back under your bridge, troll
JIM LANDERS must be important. He types in all caps.
Jim Landers is a troll. Occasionally we’ll post a comment of us just to show our readers some of the sh*t we receive but don’t post.
By far most of our commenters abide by our decency rules.
Our 6th donation came in, $25, from Lotus Street. Thanks very much!
I would donate to OB Rags, but you have deleted some of my comments or never post them in certain articles in the past which I still don’t understand why. That’s your lost. I’m an OB/PL Resident for life.
7th here for $30 from Greene Street and 8th for $25 from Del Mar Ave. Thanks all!
It’s really inspiring to see such an immediate response from our readers and friends. Here’s the comment from one friend:
“While we may not always agree, you are an incredible resource for our community. Thanks”
We’ve received over $200, most in small donations. We’re almost half way to our weekend goal of $500.
What happened to the $100,000 donation?
Frank, how are you enjoying that new Tesla?
Frank drives a Tesla & can’t come up with the $500? Please tell me this is a joke! Ha.
Actually I drive a 13-year old PT Cruiser.
FYI Canada-US exchange rate is $0.75 today.
Thanks, dude, for your contrib. So, it was more expensive than you thought?
No, I knew the amount. Just remarking on how the Cdn dollar has dropped. Was close to par not so long ago.
it’s in the (g)mail.
for those interested in using PayPal, send it to obragblog@gmail.com

Friends – thank you so much – we have raised $850 !! in our first day!
The Surf Birdz love The OB Rag! We especially love the great job you guyz did covering the ridiculous surveillance cameras at the beach. Why don’t we have a fund-raiser for you guyz? We could raise a bunch of money to support a great cause, plus have an excuse to get OBecians together to enjoy some local surf music. Tell us when and where and we will be there….we wanna support you guyz.
Surf BirdZ – we are definitely down for that. Please send us contact info via our email: obragblog@gmail.com
thx

Next time we talk sell me some advertising. I just closed a few deals and am in a brief period of being not as broke as usual…
You’re on.
Cancelled my subscription to the Union-Tribune, so had a few bucks to spare to support a much better local news source. OBRag requires no subscription…it’s free!
Friends – Amazing! We have raised our week goal of $1,000 in 2 days! Wow! We’re stunned. Such an outpouring of good cheer in the middle of July.
Latest count – including some commitments made : at least $1200 has been raised since Friday morning – 3 days!
