OBTC Mallow Out postOB Town Council: Please Take the Pledge – and Volunteers Are Needed for “Peace Patrol” and Day After Clean-Up

Editor: The following message from Gretchen Newsom, Chair of the OB Town Council, is all about the the continuation of the successful “Mallow Out” campaign for the second July 4th in OB in a row. After a horrendous aftermath from the 2013 war, many in the community became repulsed by the widespread destruction and marring of lower Newport Ave and other blocks around the beach.

In 2014, the OBTC single-highhandedly initiated a public awareness campaign against OB’s infamous “Marshmallow Wars”, called the “Mallow Out” pledge. OBceans and local merchants were invited to take the pledge to not sell or bring marshmallows at the beach. The pledge last year was very successful.  Please see the accompanying photos from the OBTC.

THANK YOU for taking the pledge to ‘Mallow Out!’ Your solidarity and support will help keep our streets, beaches, and ocean clean, enhance public safety, and help our local economy thrive.

Please invite your friends and neighbors to take the Mallow-Out pledge: or go to the OBTC.

Also, what made a BIG difference last year was all the community volunteers that cleaned up marshmallows immediately after the fireworks, i.e. not waiting until the next morning.

If you are able and available, please join our ‘Peace Patrol’ on the 4th of July.

Some members of the Peace Patrol will collect and trade bags of marshmallows for ‘Respect OB’ stickers before the 4th of July Fireworks from 4:00-7:00pm (meet up at the OB Hotel) and then donate the collected marshmallows to local Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts for s’mores.

You are also invited to join adult Peace Patrol members to help clean-up marshmallows right after the Fireworks show at 9:30pm – just head down to Veterans Plaza at the end of Newport Avenue and we’ll provide you with a bag and gloves (by quickly removing marshmallows from the ground, we’ll prevent them from getting stomped on, becoming a sticky mess, and/or being used as gunked up ‘re-ammunition’).

By the way, local news crews are already lining up to do live shots of the ‘gooey’ debris starting at 5:15am on the 5th – which does not bode well for our local merchants and community – let’s show San Diego that OB is awesome and can again #MallowOut.

Thank you for your support and pledge to #MallowOut, and we hope you have a safe and fun 4th of July!
