UPDATE: Here’s a Report on the OB Planning Board meeting.

The Ocean Beach Planning Board meets Wednesday, November 5th, at the OB Rec Center, located at 4726 Santa Monica Ave.  The monthly meeting – held in the Center’s community room, begins sharply at 6pm.

The Board has four action items on its agenda.

Demolition and Construction at 4741 Del Mar Ave

First up, is an application to demolish an existing house and garage at 4741 Del Mar Avenue and replace them with a 2-story single-family residence with detached garage.

4741 Del Mar Ave.

The house would have a total of 3,130 square feet. The lot is 7,000 square feet. The Board’s sub-committee, the Project Review Committee looked at the project on October 15 – we do not know what their recommendation to the full Board was about this project.

Cross-Walk at Abbott and Newport?

The 2nd action item will have the Board consider different conceptual designs for a possible cross-walk at Abbott Street and Newport Avenue.

Here is what we reported earlier:

There’s apparently some money around that will enable the City to make specific infrastructure repairs and improvements for pedestrians.  So, some City staffers are looking into installing some pedestrian controls at the busy half-intersection of OB’s main commercial drag – the grand Newport Avenue and Abbott Street – the street that parallels the ocean.

Currently, there’s no painted strips in the roadway or any traffic control device or sign, and it’s been like that for decades and it’s always been busy.  Yet, tourists and visitors aren’t certain what to do when they reach a point where they wish to cross, and perhaps something there would be helpful.

The OB Rag also ran a poll on the issue. A clear majority – 58% – favored some kind of pedestrian controls – but a plurality of the overall total – 32% – felt controls are “okay” but did not support the installation of any stop lights.

Bike Corral on Bacon at Santa Monica

Up for numero treis is a consideration by the Board of the installation of a new “bicycle corral” on Bacon Street and Santa Monica Avenue.

A Round-about at West Pt Loma and Bacon

Lastly, the Board will look at the feasibility of having the City study installing a “round-about” or traffic circle at the intersection of West Pt Loma Blvd and Bacon Street, a particularly busy and at times, confusing, intersection at the entrance to Robb Field.

Here’s the official agenda:

If they provide cost estimates for these items I’d be very curious to hear. Especially in regard to the roundabout, which I would love to see used much more across San Diego. Great tool for improving traffic flow and increasing safety without major reconfiguration of roads.

Why is a four way stop sign at Bacon and West Pt. Loma considered “confusing?” Seems to me it works just fine. More confusing are the intersections of West Pt. Loma and Cable and Abbott.

I couldn’t agree more. I live on West Point loma between cable and bacon and the intersection at bacon is never an issue. The confusing intersection (for non-locals) is West Point loma and cable. It’s not only confusing for some, it’s dangerous as hell. I avoid the intersection at all costs especially when I’m on my bike. I’m not a big fan of additional ltraffic lights but installing one at West Point loma and cable would not only ease any last minute lane confusion but it would also slow the speed of traffic down which I think is the most important. I would rather have congestion than danger. People are constantly speeding on West Point loma down to the stop sign at bacon. Just recently a locals dog was killed by a speeding hit and run driver.
