High surf, a possible boon for surfers, is expected at Ocean Beach and other San Diego County beaches today, Thursday, through Monday, December 3rd. A high surf advisory is now in effect from 6 a.m. today until 1 p.m. Monday. The high surf is the result of a storm in the Northeast Pacific Ocean.
Large waves could break over the Ocean Beach Pier during this period of time. Plus the smaller jetties could be adversely affected.
The National Weather Service forecasts surf heights today, that would then peak late Friday, and gradually lower on Sunday and Monday.
The advisory stated:
“High surf and very strong rip currents will result in dangerous swimming conditions at the beaches, especially for inexperienced swimmers.”
The weather service says that surf that could reach between 4 and 7 feet Thursday a.m. and is expected to build to between 6 to 9 feet tonight through Saturday.
NWS forecasters also warn that waves could likely break across the entrance to Mission Bay and larger waves could wash over jetties and low-lying portions of the Ocean Beach Pier.
Tidal flow of in excess of six feet will happen between between morning high tides and afternoon low tides. Beach erosion also could occur. The surf heights are expected to drop below 7 feet at most beaches by Monday afternoon, with west-facing beaches likely to see the largest waves.
