Support the one-day strike up at UCSD today of University of California research & technical workers – and take a stand for protecting the integrity of education at the University of California.
The strike, at all UC campuses including UCSD, to protest the University’s unfair labor practices is scheduled for the first day of class to coincide with events by other groups also protesting University of California policies and practices that threaten the University’s educational mission.
Over 1,100 UC faculty have signed the UC Faculty walkout statement. The Unversity of California Students Association, representing 220,000 undergraduates, has unanimously endorsed the walkout and strike.
Picket lines are planned from 7am – 4pm for the Gilman Entrance info booth and the Gilman parking structure at the intersection of Gilman Drive and Via La Jolla with a rally around noon at the Gilman parking structure.

Thousands of UC San Diego students and faculty may take part in a UC systemwide walkout and strike Thursday to protest furloughs, layoffs and tuition hikes stemming from state budget cuts.
The University Professional & Technical Employees union is leading the demonstrations, which are planned to simultaneously begin on all 10 UC campuses at 7 a.m. — the first day of the fall term.
“We’re striking to take a stand for education,” said UPTE President Jelger Kalmijn, a research associate at UCSD. “Our unfair labor practice strike is about the illegal cuts (UC President) Mark Yudof is making to the university,” Kalmijn said.
“He is obligated to bargain with us, but instead he’s taking unilateral and unwise actions. His furloughs and layoffs, proposed tuition hikes and lack of budget transparency threaten the public mission of our university.”
The University of California Students Association, the representative body for students in the UC system, has endorsed today’s work stoppage and rally. Likewise, more than 1,100 UC faculty members have signed a petition in support of the action, along with 1,400 graduate students systemwide.
