Man Responsible for Fatal ‘Superman Punch’ in Ocean Beach Pleads Guilty to Voluntary Manslaughter; Faces 12 Years in Prison

A man who was responsible for punching another guy in Ocean Beach so hard that he fell and hit his head on the pavement, lapsing into a coma and dying 3 months later, has pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter.

Andrew Phillip Restrepo, 34, had been charged with the murder of Sean Glenn for administering what was called a “Superman punch”, agreed to the new charge and having the murder charge dropped, just before he was to stand trial.

The incident occurred on May 10, 2023 in the 5000 block of Newport Avenue in Ocean Beach. Restrepo also pleaded guilty to felony assault for punching another man on an MTS bus in the Midway area in a month before the fatal encounter.  Restrepo was arrested in August 2024.

Here’s a February 5 report from Peninsula Beacon:

Deputy District Attorney Jessica Sutterley said Restrepo will receive 11 years in prison for manslaughter, plus one year consecutively for the bus assault, for a total prison term of 12 years. A murder charge was dropped.

One witness at the April 9 preliminary hearing told the court that Restrepo gave “a Superman punch” to Glenn. Sutterley said Restrepo has had training in martial arts.

Store surveillance cameras showed an ambulance appearing to take Glenn to a hospital. After Restrepo was arrested, his camera showed that he had taken photos of the ambulance that night and sent them to five people while he was across the street.

Restrepo was entering a pizza shop in Ocean Beach when Glenn accidentally brushed by him upon leaving. Restrepo took offense, and minutes later asked Glenn outside why he touched him, witnesses said. Glenn said he didn’t know what Restrepo was talking about and then was punched.

Restrepo was arrested on Aug. 27, 2024. He remains in jail without bail.

San Diego Superior Court Judge Jeffrey Fraser set his sentencing for March 6.
