I want to extend my personal congratulations to Shane Harris, the new owner and publisher of the San Diego Monitor and Business Journal, and to warmly welcome him to the local news media community in this town.
Shane has a distinguished record of civic leadership and of advocacy for civil rights. He has been a powerful force for justice, and has spoken out for so many whose voices are too often silenced. Now he will become a force for the mission of journalism, which is to comfort the afflicted and to afflict the comfortable.
At a time when news organizations are struggling and even under attack — with some collapsing, I am delighted that Shane will invigorate our local media as the Monitor’s publisher. This town really needs it.
On behalf of the Rag’s staff and readers, we wish Shane and his staff the very best.

Over the years, as I’ve listened to Shane speak truth to power again and again, I’ve thought: This man really should be in journalism. And now he is! This is such splendid news. Shane and his staff are going to make a huge difference, and at just the right time.
Outstanding thank you Shane Harris for all that you have done for all the People of this City. And thank you for what this city, county and state need more than anything, intrepid investigative journalism.
Grateful to welcome a new voice to San Diego’s media landscape. Shane’s viewpoints — and those of his contributors— will help keep all of us better informed about what’s really happening in our city, and inside city and county governments.
