Stop the Cell Tower at Collier Park and the OB Community Garden — Sign the Petition

The Issue

AT&T is planning to install a 30-foot “faux eucalyptus” cell tower with 12 antennas, 9 radio units, and a large ground equipment box at 2315 Soto Street — right on public park land. This proposal would allow a private corporation to permanently occupy our limited green space, replacing community potential with a commercial eyesore.

The residents of Ocean Beach oppose this project and request that the City of San Diego deny the Conditional Use Permit.  This fenced-off area is still community land and could be transformed into something valuable for all of us.

Why We Oppose This Project

  • Loss of Public Space: The proposed tower will be built on rare, valuable public space that could instead serve children, families, and neighbors.
  • Health & Safety Concerns: Although research is ongoing, many residents are understandably concerned about the proximity of high-frequency antennas to homes, children, and pets.
  • Property Value Risk: Cell towers can negatively impact nearby home values due to aesthetics and perceived health risks.
  • Visual Blight: Even as a disguised “faux eucalyptus,” a 30-foot structure with 12 antennas, 9 radio units, and a ground equipment box will mar the natural and open look of our neighborhood. What We’d Rather See:

We believe this land should be used for true community benefit. Ideas include:

  • A much-needed community pool (none currently exists in Ocean Beach or Point Loma)
  • A new playground or park expansion to support local families
  • An extension of the thriving community garden and space for educational workshops

Let’s Send a Message Together. We demand transparency, community input, and a commitment to preserving public spaces for public good — not private profit.

SIGN THE PETITION to protect Collier Park and ensure public land stays in the community’s hands.

  1. “Loss of Public Space: The proposed tower will be built on rare, valuable public space that could instead serve children, families, and neighbors.”

This is the biggest issue! So much is dedicated to street parking, roads, and private property why take away what little public space we have. I do not have the details, but it is usually the case that building these types of structures on private property would be extremely expensive but for some reason government tends to be keen on providing heavily discounted public space to private companies.

  2. This story made my Google feed so that is great.

I live down the street from Collier Park so I know the history of it all. The original gift from Collier was very big but has been carved up ever since. These chunks have been cut out:

    1. The apartments in between the park and the Natural Plant Garden.

    2. Nimitz Blvd.

    3. Correia Middle School

    4. The tract of land south of Famosa across from Cleator Park is scheduled to have 78 new “affordable” homes.

Enough. We do not need to surrender any more of the park land that is left, especially not to a private business.

  3. Fenced off land? If it hasn’t been used, then what’s the issue?
Seems like this could provide internet to people (I think most want) and help with city budgets.

    1. The issue is that it is PARK LAND.

We already have internet. This is just another competitor.

Make a deal with the apartments and erect something there. Pay the price.

  4. Signed petition and donated.

Should this tower get shoved down our throats like all the other repulsive changes going on in our community….they should have to pay for and put money in a maintenance account to purchase, install along with any ADA requirements to replace the playground equipment the city removed many years ago. There are many children in this area and they should have nearby safe and fun equipment and allow kids to enjoy the park which is primarily utilized and a leash free dog park.

  5. We are facing a similar situation in Oceanside, CA with Lake Park and 3 schools located very close to the proposed 70 foot tower. Every weekend soccer and softball games play a few feet from the proposed cell tower. Our property is less than 55 feet from it. We have filed an appeal. Please reach out to us for any questions about this project and suggestions on how you were able to organize your appeal to stop the cell tower.
    Thank you! (clarencewong92@gmail.com)
