Thank you so much for publishing this. Took my first walk on this pier in 1987 and knew I had found my Place of Peace. 30+ years of walking it on almost daily basis &, as of several years ago, it’s no longer an option. I realize it isn’t for you either, but I’ve moved several states away. San Diego & OB are just too crowded for me. I sure do miss it. When I clicked on Rag the other day, I was transported in time & place. Could just hear the waves & birds. Felt like I should maybe check for that familiar taste of salt on my lip. So thanks for giving me that special moment.
Many years ago Pelicans were on the endangered species list, or so I was told. I had a 35mm camera and I was trying to get the right focus on the big bird, a homeless woman walked toward me, saying “That is Peter.” Then she walked towards the bird, waving her extended right arm and saying “Hey Peter”. My camera was pointed towards the bird, and as the woman shouted and waved Peter flew! I got the most beautiful photo of a Pelican in full wing extension as he took off over the ocean. “Hey Peter” hung on my wall for many years. One Pelican, 30 years ago! Wonder what Peter thinks as he flies over the pier today?
We left OB 34 years ago but visited in 2023, walked multiple times on the pier … and then it closed. But this photo makes me happy, because squadrons of brown pelicans were the OTHER thing we deeply loved about living there. (“We” included my husband, who died suddenly last fall, one year after our OB trip.) I hope this is a frequent occurrence and that they are being left alone to use the people-free pier as they see fit. If so, I might just have to fly down for a look.
Pelican habitat….you know they just waited for the humans to leave.
Maybe they can scrape the droppings and sell as fertilizer, instead of washing it into the water–may lead to high bacteria in swim/surf zone.
