Call to Action — Submit Comments to San Diego Planning Commission Before Thursday, May 1 to Oppose Mayor’s ADU ‘Reforms’

PLEASE TAKE 2 MINUTES TO SUBMIT YOUR COMMENT TO THE SAN DIEGO PLANNING COMMISSIONERS BEFORE THIS THURSDAY, MAY 1, 2025

On Thursday, May 1 at 9 am, the Planning Commission will review the Mayor’s proposed changes to the Bonus ADU Program.

These proposed changes will do little to alleviate the harm that the Bonus ADU Program is causing to first-time homebuyers and single-family neighborhoods (as are outlined in various recent posts here).

Whether you can attend the meeting or not, please submit a comment on the Planning Commission’s web portal before Thursday morning’s meeting.

I oppose the Mayor’s Bonus ADU amendments as presented. While they are a good start, they leave the Program mostly unaltered in San Diego’s RS 1–7 zones (single-family zoning), where 90% of Bonus ADU projects are being built.

In its March 4th resolution, the City Council instructed the Planning Department to bring forth revisions to the Bonus ADU Program. The Council expected the Planning Department to come up with provisions that would eliminate outlying projects in all single-family zones, not just a few select ones.

I respectfully ask the Planning Commission to delay considering the Mayor’s proposed Bonus ADU changes until the Planning Department can provide more robust Bonus ADU modifications, such as those recommended by the Community Planners Committee.
