It’s Still a Life or Death Situation

I realize that this article will tick off a lot of people.  Some people will agree with me.  At this point I really don’t care if you agree or disagree, but there is a tremendous problem out there that some are denying really exists.

Yes, I am speaking about the death rate of COVID-19.

Yesterday, at one of the larger shopping malls in the Los Angeles area, there was an “anti-masker” protest.  It was an organized demonstration  and a whole lot of people went to this mall, unmasked. They tried to get into many of the shops that were open for sales as they could.  They coughed in people’s faces.  They fought with the management; they fought with those people wearing masks; they put hundreds of people’s lives at risk because of their belief that COVID-19 doesn’t exist, that it is something that the fake media made up.

It is easier to forgive ignorance than it is stupidity. In this case, it is hard to forgive either. How many times have you heard people say that they didn’t believe this epidemic existed until they – or friends – or relatives came down with it?

How many times have you heard trump quoted as saying that this will go away right after the presidential election? How many times have you heard people say that the numbers are elevated? That there have not been as many deaths as have been reported? Just yesterday the President of the United States made that statement and Dr. Anthony Fauci had to correct him and say, unequivocally, that the numbers are correct; that that many deaths have occurred and there are going to be thousands more after the Christmas and New Years holiday statistics come in. THOUSANDS.

What is it going to take to make believers out of these people? I, personally, have lost a very dear friend to COVID-19; I have a grandson and his girl friend that had it; my niece and her husband have it, etc. Yesterday one of my tenants was quite upset and when I asked him why he told me that 3 of his friends were just diagnosed with this insidious disease.  Although they all know each other, they were never near each other to pass it on.

I sympathize with the restaurant owners, the nail salons, the gym owners, and anyone else that has been told to close their businesses. But rather than fight it – or have illegal gatherings – let’s all do it for 3 weeks.  Wear the mask; close the business; let’s get this disease under control.  The first time a business is opened illegally and someone that might not even know he/she has it exposes all the others in that business, we are back to the beginning again. You cannot disobey the rules and expect that the disease will just disappear.

And as a former principal – let me say something about reopening the schools.  Picture a 2nd grader – 6-7 years old, sitting at her desk with a mask on and she sneezes.  What do you think she will do?  She will wipe his nose with her hand; pick up a pencil and begin to complete the assignment she was given before she sneezed.  Then all the pencils will be collected so that the next masked child can pick up that same pencil and write with it.  Does she have COVID? Who knows? But there is a good chance she might.  And let’s not forget the teacher in the room.  They usually have 30 students; now 15.  So they can be exposed 15 times instead of 30.  Why are they even being put at risk one time?

For those parents that say their child isn’t learning – teach them. It doesn’t have to be algebra, or history, or something else you are not familiar with.  Learning takes place in many different ways – teach the child how to cook. Use measuring skills – translation – math – to put together cookies, bread, meat, etc.  Go online and get a book on carpentry.  Let her play with putting together different objects. Again using the math skills necessary to put together a decent building.  Or get some large paper and have the child draw a tree; or a building; or practice her handwriting. Maybe this is the time to teach her cursive because she won’t get it when school reopens.

Buy some comic books; some magazines.  Reading takes place in many different areas. It doesn’t matter what the text is – what you want her to do is to read.  Turn on a television program; turn off the sound.  Have her write a story about what she just saw, or have her tell you the story on tape.  Keep the mind busy. She doesn’t need a desk to learn.  Have him count the number of birds that fly into the backyard; get him a book on birds so he can identify them.  There are endless things you can do at home to enhance his learning.

San Diego is fraught full of history. Take him to Balboa Park. Let him read about the museums at Balboa Park and then have him write down 5 things he would like to see while there.    There is so much that can be done that is “learning.”

But for goodness sake – keep her or him safe.  Keep the grocery store clerks safe.  Keep the postal workers safe.  Wear the mask.  Don’t spread a germ you don’t think you have that later turns out to be a killer.  Start listening to science and not to naysayers that have no idea what they are talking about.  Remember – science is what rid us of polio; what rid us of small pox; of diphtheria; of measles.  The scientists know what they are doing.  Listen to them.  Keep America safe.

Another idea – because children are so creative if you let them think – get a map of the US – let them plot a trip for the family when things are open. Let them research the different spots of the states they want to visit – and write about it (or narrate it on tape.) There are so many ways to learn while at home.

Sorry, but there is no cure for stupid.

Even though there are many anti maskers I still like to hear anyone speak out against them. We need signs on Newport, like in Imperial Beach or LaJolla, Coronado, etc. reminding people about masks and physical distancing, etc.. The administration and all the higher up people “in charge” need to get a spine about enforcement of Covid rules.

I think spines went out with the testicles that seem to be missing in many of the representatives.

Reply

Geoff Page January 4, 2021 at 4:00 pm

Was testicles really necessary? Are you saying it’s only the men who are to blame?

Reply

Judi Curry January 4, 2021 at 4:38 pm

Get off my back, Geoff. Only men have testicles and the majority of people that are not able to stand up to trump are men. Yes. testicles are necessary. Would you rather I use the word “balls?” Somewhere along the way they have shrunk in these representatives.

Chris January 4, 2021 at 5:01 pm

Maybe I’m misunderstanding the point, but I DO see just as many women anti maskers as men.

Judi Curry January 4, 2021 at 7:41 pm

This is stupid and completely off the point of the article. The loss of testicles and no spine was generic. I do not feel it is necessary to expound on this any more

Well, the definitions of stupid almost all refer to the quality of a person as an adjective, such as:
1. Slow to learn or understand; obtuse.
2. Tending to make poor decisions or careless mistakes.
3. Marked by a lack of intelligence or care; foolish or careless: a stupid mistake.
4. Dazed, stunned, or stupefied: felt stupid after taking the pain medication.
5. Used to express disparagement or exasperation.

Giving you the benefit of doubt, I’m assuming you were not directing that at me personally so I’m guessing #5 covers your usage.

I’m also not sure what you mean by “generic.” The most common meaning is “Characteristic of or relating to a class or group of things; not specific.” Now, a lack of a spine would fit that definition. But, the word testicles is specific to one half of the human race so it does not fit that definition.

Lastly, I was not commenting on the article, I was commenting on your comment. Had you just stopped at “spine,” there would be no discussion. But, you had to make it clear that you blame men for not standing up to the idiot. I just spoke up to make it clear it is not only men who needed to stand up to the LOSER.

Chris January 5, 2021 at 4:36 am

So I take that as a yes.

I’m not on your back, I just don’t care to see disparaging remarks about men, that are very often in what you write, go unanswered. I guarantee that if I included similar remarks about women in my stuff, all hell would break loose. This is not a male-only issue and once again, blaming men, just ruins your point. Your remark absolves women of anything and makes it appear that women are not capable of standing up to t-rump and that they need their men to do that. I would think a few women would take issue with that.

Try writing whole sentences, Eric, it’s fun and actually understandable. Just hit a few more keys.

I’m still yawning at your sexism.
Better?

Reply

Geoff Page January 5, 2021 at 6:05 pm

Well, I’m going to need an explanation about how a comment objecting to a sexist comment is sexist.

Reply

Chris January 5, 2021 at 6:59 pm

The explanation is virtu signaling. I don’t think Eric there really holds the opinion that anything you said was truly sexist.

No kidding! Sorry about that. Blame it on old eyes and old fingers and not knowing the difference between my right and left. :-)

The problem isn’t only people who deny the existence (or if not the existence, the severity), it the people who are fully aware but don’t feel they should have to modify there behavior for the benefit of others. They assume that if they get it they’ll be fine and if anyone who is in real danger (which in reality is all of us) should be the one’s to self isolate. Even more appalling are those who feel the world is better off if the sickest DO die off. Truly scary.

Speaking of businesses, I also sympathize. Losing your livelihood you put your heart and soul into (not to mention all your savings) is no small price to pay. There really is no silver lining there. Sadly, some businesses are really going above and beyond simple statements of defiance. A friend of mine who lives in MB mentioned that over the weekend, Ms. Bs had a fully packed patio. Even worse , Draft had diners both outside AND inside and it was packed. Hillcrest has a few places open for outdoor dining. And worse of all, a co-worker of mine who lives in IB said a bar (not sure which one) there had patrons inside and a homemade piñata of Gavin Newsom hanging from a noose. Yikes.

Is it better to lose your business or your life? We do not live in a country where we should have to make that choice for ourselves or other people. People over 80 have been vaccinated in England. In Spain, a lockdown means a fine if you you disobey the rules. San Diego increase in cases is labelled “uncontrolled” in some of this weeks study. Is this really an argument about all men, or about one? People who want to live should be able to have a society that supports that decision. Thank you, Judi, for bringing up the important issue on the table.

Chris January 5, 2021 at 7:06 pm

I don’t think anyone who reads and comments on the Rag (other than trolls) dispute that lives take precedence over livelihoods. But losing your lively hood is still a big price to pay. For many bar and restaurant owners (not talking about large corporate groups like Trust or Cohn) this IS their sole income.

I was trying to say we should not have to make a choice of lives or livelihoods. We should be able to have both in this country. We should have designed a workable and effective mask by now, and our government should not have to decide if workers or older people get vaccinations. They both should get them. This is not the 17th Century.

Hahaha, omg! A writers’ dust up! The real culprit here, if there even IS a culprit, is ‘thread inconsistency” — for lack of a better term. Conclusion? Everyone is right! :-)
1. So Widder Curry writes about the ongoing dangers of Covid and how to teach your children at home. …
2. Commenter Kate endorses the anti-masker prevalence, and adds the statement that “admin” and “higher up people” (aka Congresspeople) need more spine…
3. Judi says spines went out with testicles, in “representatives” (presumably, not the general anti-masker population)…
4. Insert clarification for Geoff and Chris: With respect to Congresspeople, there ARE many more men than women, with respect to general public, there are just as many women anti-maskers as men, maybe even more!
5. Writers get prickly, defend gender stereotyping, and a writer’s “artistic license”. Kibitzers weigh in, and the thread gains more traction than the piece!!
Yep, sounds about right :-)

Simple explanation: Trump’s fault.

Works for everything else!

As usual, reasonably said, retired.

I do have to make one comment. Yes, there are more men than women in Congress but there are 126 women representing states, four more representing American Samoa, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, and 25 senators. I get 155 women, which is not a small number. So, they have no responsibility because of their anatomy?
