A skateboarder was found dead in the street on the 4500 block of Voltaire Street in OB around 10:30 pm Thursday evening. And as of the latest report from 10News, it may have been a hit and run.
Police and media initially reported the person was a “pedestrian” with “a crumpled skateboard nearby.”
San Diego police were called to the site after a call came in around 10:30 that there was a man lying in the street. So far the victim is unidentified was declared dead at the scene.
Police say they have little to work with, as of now, there is no witness, no vehicle description, no skid marks on the street. Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact San Diego police.
Until we hear from the coroner’s office about the nature of the poor guy’s fatal injuries, the issue of whether it was a hit-and-run may not be solved.

the diagonal parking, lack of lighting, 4x4s extending 2 feet into a 5 foot wide street, plenty of alcohol, cell phones, youthful drivers and fast cars in a hurry to get into the traffic jam to get on 8…all in all, a good area to stay out of the road on a skateboard. it’s hard to believe none of the cameras on voltaire caught the culprit.
This accident did not happen in the area of diagonal parking, it was east of Ebers St. This also happened at 10:30 p.m., as the story said, so no one was rushing to work. I live a block away and skateboarders are always in the street there because there is a hill they can ride down fast from Bolinas to Froude. My guess is the guy was in the street in the dark and may not have been wearing light-colored clothing. Not excusing a hit and run, if that proves to be the case, but the facts are important. The skateboarders reach high speed on that hill, it’s possible he lost control and crashed. Best to hear more details before blaming everything else.
Scott, very correct about the problem of oversized trucks in the diagonal parking areas. I think there just needs to be a line down the street, and parking into it gets a ticket. Every single time you drive down voltaire newport and santa monica, you have to suddenly stop when the car ahead of you brakes to go around a pickup.
Want to park an oversized vehicle, which probably gets 18 miles a gallon and obstructs traffic? You’ll have to pay for a private space.
I saw a posting on Facebook OB Patrol Group there was a car accident at Ebers and Voltaire just a few days ago. This intersection is probably 60’+ wide and is very difficult to see around the curve and not very safe to cross by foot or car. Not sure about the details of the accident?
The intersection of Ebers and Voltaire is a standard size intersection and there is no curve within 500 feet. Visibility is excellent all four directions. The only nearby curve is at the intersection of Froude and Voltaire.
You are right, thank you for catching this. I wonder about the cause of the accident. Who was traveling from where and how fast.
with all due respect, the intersection in question is treacherous as hell. many car head across voltaire on ebert. cars are parked on the left and it’s almost impossible to see a speeding car so it’s necessary to pull out into voltaire and then one needs to check for speeding traffic coming from the right. meanwhile, one has just entered the bike path where speeding bikes must contend with drivers who are afraid of being hit by traffic coming in both directions. for whatever that might be worth…
I think you have the street wrong, Scott. there is a traffic signal at Ebers and Voltaire. The discussion is about Froude and Voltaire, which I think you meant judging by your description. Why anyone would need to cross Voltaire at Froude is beyond me. It is not a good spot to do that for the reasons you gave but one block in either direction solves all those problems. Ebers has a traffic light and the next block east of Froude has none of those issues. Some intersections should be avoided and there is no pressing need to make this crossing, it is residential on both sides of Voltaire.
