Just What Is Nextdoor?

By Judi Curry

Let me begin this biased report by saying that I have been reduced to a “read only” status on our neighborhood Nextdoor.  And yes, I admit that I violated their rules re: no political discussions on this site.

And yes, I admit that it has happened more than one time. However, many things that I write about are politically motivated – be it outright, or “under the covers.”  And yes, I admit to being a liberal; I cannot stand the person in the White House; I have no tolerance for people that were my friends – and relatives – supporting children in cages; separating families; no medical attention; no flu shots.

I am in favor of the “American Dream” – let those seeking a better life seek it here – we can all benefit from their desires.  So … with that in mind let me tell you what the “read only” restriction means:

Someone posted the other day that their doggie was missing.  I saw the dog just minutes after the post.  I could not tell the owner where there dog was because I can only “READ”. No comment.

I had an intruder break into the back yard a few weeks ago. I could not alert my neighbors of this intrusion because I can only “Read.” No comment.

My neighbor had his car stolen from his driveway last week. I could not alert my neighbors because I am in “Read Only” status.

I cannot post any of my restaurant reviews because I am in “Read Only” status.  That means that readers on Nextdoor cannot find out about the great new restaurants opening in the neighborhood. [Unless you read the OB Rag.] (Yes, there are other reviewers that you can read.)  It also means that the owner of the new restaurants cannot get the word out about the new establishments on Nextdoor, and that negates new diners.

It means when someone posts on “Nextdoor” what is happening with the Bermuda steps and I have an answer I cannot answer them. I can’t even send them a private message.

It means that when I have information about the new 4-way stop sign that is going to be put up on the corner of Sunset Cliffs and Pt. Loma Avenue I cannot alert the neighborhood.

Even my article on the horrific bike lanes that are appearing all over San Diego – “horrific” is my take on it – I cannot tell readers about the newest ones, and, if your break it down completely, it is also a politically motivated endeavor.

You have the picture by now.

According to their website,

“Nextdoor is the private social network for your neighborhood.  It is the best way to stay informed about going on in your neighborhood – whether it’s finding a last-minute babysitter, planning a social event, or sharing safety tips….A community built by you and your neighbors.”

They go on to say that “Nextdoor is the world’s largest social network for the neighborhood.  It enables truly local conversations that empower neighbors to build stronger and safer communities.”

I thought it was also interesting to see that it is a “privately-held company based in San Francisco with the backing of prominent investors including, Benchmark Capital, Greylock Partners, Kleiner Perkins, Axel Springer and others.”

We, as neighbors, live together cohesively day after day after day. Some of us agree on some things; others agree on other things. At no time will we all agree on the same thing, even if it benefits the area.

Nextdoor gives you the opportunity to block – or mute – someone that you do not want to hear from, read about, or interact with.  No one is forcing anyone to read an article; no one is forcing anyone to respond – or not respond – to a article, blog, or…..

Politics is everywhere.  The once proposed grocery strike; the once Kaiser proposed strike; the bike lanes; the new transit prices and routes; the new freeway construction.  You don’t want to read about it? Don’t.

Nextdoor should be about allowing the neighbors to express opinions re: everything and anything that affects our living conditions.

To reduce us – me, in particular, to a “Read Only” mode – that may be “revisited in September if I apply for reinstatement” – takes away from the entire purpose of Nextdoor.

I feel like I am being sent to the Principal’s office because I was a bad girl.

But you know what? I am a bad girl! And I do not write to make friends.

I write because too many of us just sit back, complain, and do nothing.  So…if Nextdoor wants to restrict me that is their prerogative.

And for those of you that sent in supporting letters, I thank you.  At a time when journalists are losing their jobs; at a time when there is more and more “fake news” I will still continue to get my message out to the community.  You can read it; you can get ticked at me – some of the scars are quite deep – but it won’t stop me.

Oh yeah – have a nice day.

And as an addendum – If I promise not to write anything political ever again, my ability to use “NextDoor” has been reinstated.  Don’t look for anything from me in the near future. – What a shame – there was so much potential at one time.

Very well written, Judi. But the problems with Nextdoor may be worse than we have imagined:

Nextdoor allows SOME people to use ND as a soapbox and bans others who present a different view. There may be corruption of Nextdoor “Neighborhood Leads”, and it could also be a strategy of the local climate change deniers, who report points of view they disagree with, however, the effect on the community is the same in either case.

Someone in Nextdoor disabled my account claiming that I had used “Chair PLTC”, which just isn’t true, as my Nextdoor user name is my legal name. Then Nextdoor blocked my ability to respond by email after I submitted a photo image of my passport showing my user name. I then received the following message when I responded to an ND email:

Hi Michael, Thanks for contacting us. The case you’ve referenced is no longer active. To find answers to common Nextdoor questions, please take a look at our Help Center. If you are unable to find the answer to your inquiry in our help pages, please fill out our Contact Us form and we’ll get back to you within 72 hours. Thank you, Nextdoor Support Team

There are no private rainstorms and there are no non-local issues. As Judi infers, one person may share a nexus that is critical to the success of the community and perhaps, to global ecology. Human survival was enabled by ability to collaborate.

Several people in our community are upset about this situation with Nextdoor, which in a way has hijacked our community identity. There is talk about a boycott, which could become a national boycott. We need a community owned, democratically governed, politically uncensored platform to replace Nextdoor. This is the project I’ve been working on called, Point Loma Town Council. Nextdoor is showing us why we need PLTC.

There are plenty of outlets for endless political argument. I’m sure your political viewpoints are very important to you but keep in mind most do not want to hear them on a community group. Including many that may agree with your politics.

You have only yourself to blame after the warnings. Imagine how awful and useless and divise the community social media would be if everyone freely posted their unsolicitied national political views?

It’s kind of funny. I have put Next Door on mute. I was getting WAY too much information about the moral standards and lack of empathy in my “neighbors.” Ignorance is bliss and also good for my blood pressure!

I’m sorry you wanted to be on there but got kicked out though. That is just too bad for them.

WTF? Now I have to Boycott Nextdoor, not that I read it often. Any forum that bans Judi Curry is not a place for me.

Have to say, I agree with triggerfinger on this one. Nextdoor? Never been there, don’t need it. Just another, probably biased, “news outlet”. For projecting opinions, stick to our beloved Rag, or WaPo (if you’re liberally oriented and want to make national comment), etc.

Sounds like Nextdoor is committed to local news, not opinion? Can’t fault them for that. Like “who got creamed on an e- scooter”, not “your opinion of e-scooters”. Interestingly (including the Washington Post btw), its getting harder and harder to get news without embedded opinion. What happened to just news without the spin?

The Rag provides news with local spin, and allows for opinions. That’s where we comment on “our take” of events that affect us. Stick with that. Generally, folks seem to enjoy your commentary on this publication. So just let Nextdoor be whatever it is, biased, prejudiced, exclusionary or whatever. Pick your battles.

triggerfinger October 10, 2019 at 10:30 am

Not really. The rag has been selectively censoring my comments, which had far less vitriol than some of the writer’s. most likely because of the message. Censoring language and delivery is easy and always a good idea. Censoring content can be worthwhile depending on the medium, but is very difficult because you have to set aside your bias and be capable of censoring comments you agree with.

Let me guess — triggerfinger’s censored comments were skeptical of the natural climate change deniers or did not attack President Donald Trump.

I… am also “muted”! The person I was responding to, as you; didn’t like what I had to say & said “enjoy being muted”! I have to say, this woman was reporting seeing 2 people, in the alley behind her house “doing drugs!” She goes on to describe them & shares a photo! The photo shows a recliner back there & a big variety of other things! I said “well, why not throw out a t.v. & stove, fridge etc…jeez! She didn’t like my answer & said so. Well, I didn’t care for her dilemma (sp) either! I get muted”! So, try not to let it bother you! There are a lot of us out here!

Right on! Nextdoor.com is a much more effective and pleasant place now with its ban of Ms. Curry and Michael Winn. as well as Nextdoor’s recent ban of Mr. Winn’s apparent nom de guerre “M Ellis Winn.”

At least Aiya had the courage to use his real name, Moss. But, you just added confirmation about the low bar that Nextdoor sets. It’s an interesting low bar because it also apparently has a very low upper level.

Reply

Geoff Page October 10, 2019 at 11:38 am

A perfect example of the low bar Nextdoor sets. This guy is still on it.

Aiya’s response to a story about a man assaulting a police dog:

“Screw those police mutts, hope he beat the piss out of it.”

Aiya’s resposne to a story about a dorm robbery at SDSU:

“I love how the sister is sticking up for her brother by saying “my little 14 year old brother was already in jail for a probation violation”. 14 years old and already in jail… Please remind me again why black live matter.”

And don’t forget the memorable insight regarding a driver seriously injured in a car accident:
“… Prius drivers are the absolute WORST!!! They should only be allowed to drive in the far right lane…”

or the ever popular wisdom regarding a young couple who experienced a miscarriage:
“”…They already have 2 kids and the world is over-populated anyways. Natural selection at work. Maybe they’ll start flushing the toilets in their household now…”

You’re absolutely right about the absurdity of John Aiya’s apparent post, ” Prius drivers are the absolute WORST!!! They should only be allowed to drive in the far right lane.”

He obviously should have written, “. . . Far Left lane.”

Reply

Geoff Page October 10, 2019 at 3:31 pm

Vern did not attribute the quotes to Aiya, although he may have said those things. The quote I remember was calling a Prius a tampon on wheels.

But, Mr. Moss or whoever you are, if you don’t like the left lane why are you reading the OB Rag? The right laners are all on Nextdoor.

Chris October 10, 2019 at 8:07 am

I also agree with Triggerfinger on this one. No matter how important politics are and who’s right or wrong and politics being “everywhere”, sometimes it’s best to just use another forum. I can understand their policy. If the post is about a stop sign going up and then devolves into liberals this cooperatives that then it just gets comically silly and ultimately solves nothing. The bike lanes is an interesting example (which I support BTW) because while in a sense it IS political, it can still be debated without getting political partial.

Did you get booted from NextDoor because of the repeated political content or because you were offering to illegally rent your trailer? Are you trying to convince OB Rag readership that because your speech was liberal-leaning and then were banned, therefore NextDoor is right-leaning? If so – I’m not buying it. Every venue is not the space for every topic. NextDoor is more explicit about its rules than most, but you can’t convince me that NextDoor is bad for enforcing their own rules about speech.

Keep writing here! I enjoy reading your work (restaurant reviews, political and social commentary). I don’t always agree with your points but — I don’t feel the need to agree with every point to appreciate the perspective of a well-written piece that I can learn from.

Chris October 11, 2019 at 2:37 pm

I was more under the impression she was saying she was banned for being political period which violates ND’s policy about political discussions.

Reply

Geoff Page October 11, 2019 at 2:45 pm

Anything that hints of liberalism gets smacked. The people spewing right wing comments go untouched. You don’t have to make an overtly liberal comment, just defending issues that liberals favor such as a belief in climate change, can get you booted because the right wingers report you and Nextdoor brings the hammer down.

I have refrained from answering many of the comments made on this subject for a few days. I am amazed at many of the comments that are based on, to quote your president,”fake information.” So…Chris, you are correct. I was banned for being political. I have never “advertised” my trailer for rent. Have usually rented it when someone calls me and asks if I know of any room for rent in the Ocean Beach/Pt. Loma area. I am not illegally renting my trailer. I pay taxes on rent monies I receive. It is merely sleeping accommodations for someone needing a place to bed down for awhile. I am not saying that ND is “right leaning” – or is it “left leaning.” I merely stated a fact – I was kicked off because of my political commentaries. I am not asking anyone to agree – or disagree with me. I have had numerous emails and calls asking me if I am ill because I have not been writing. It was time to explain why that happened. I also said that I have been “reinstated” on ND as long as I do not publish political commentary. For the time being I agreed. I can say that I really want to know what my neighbors think about the political situation today. There is so much controversy – both pro and con – that listening to others helps me form my own opinion. I don’t really care if you don’t agree with me; that’s what makes America so diverse. But to be called names – like “slumlord”, for example, when, in fact, I am really helping out those that are needy, truly angers me. I go out of my way to help people that need help regardless of my political belief. If offering a place to sleep to someone that cannot afford the high rents in the neighborhood make me a bad person, so be it. And one more thing – the person that wrote that even if I was barred from ND and I saw the missing dog I could pick up the phone and call the person whose dog was missing – IF I had a phone number I could have done that. IF I had a phone number of every single person in my neighborhood to let them know that the intruder in my back yard was captured by the San Diego Police Department; IF I could have called people to let them know about my neighbors car being stolen I would have. I don’t know about you – but I do not have phone numbers of many of my neighbors. Of course I would have called. But there was no way of getting in touch with these people since I didn’t have any numbers. But just so you know what I did do – I contacted one of my friends that is also on ND, and I had her post the information. Thank goodness the powers that be didn’t know that it was me posting in disguise. Come on people. Be real. If you don’t want to read what I write, DON’T READ IT. MUTE ME. BLOCK ME. Calling me names isn’t going to make me go away.

Reply

retired botanist October 11, 2019 at 5:25 pm

Hmm, I sense tempest in a teapot again. Don’t know who’s calling you a slumlord, that’s unfortunate, but your chronic defensiveness is also a bit unfortunate. Most of the dialog has been about the orientation, and the rights (agree or disagree), of ND to run their blog the way they want. And if they don’t want political opinion embedded in their news, so be it. Seemingly, plenty of other folks have been banned, or at least curtailed, re commentary on that site.
If you see something untoward, or a missing dog, or car theft in action, or a neighbor acting out, just call the appropriate agency, animal welfare or the PD. Next Door just seems like an “over reason” to be in other people’s business and yet another social media platform with too much “orientation”. Other community forums, and there are plenty in OB, can provide better contact info, if that’s what you’re looking for.

Oh, Come on now Judi. Don’t be disingenuous. I’m looking at your posting:
“Judi Curry, Sunset Cliffs North I have a small trailer that will be available Sept. 5th. It rents for $900 if you do not have a pet; $950 if you do. There is a microwave and small refrigerator. The bathroom is in the cabana by the pool. Quiet. One block to Sunset Cliffs. 17 Aug”

And – yes it is illegal:
Park Model trailers are not allowed for permanent use on private lots. Per Health and Safety Code Sections 18009.3 and 18010, which define Park Trailers and Recreational Vehicles, a Park Model Trailer is considered to be a recreational vehicle (RV), not a type of mobile home. RV’s are not approved for permanent habitation. Per Section 635 of the Vehicle Code, a “trailer coach” is a vehicle, other than a motor vehicle, designed for human habitation or human occupancy for industrial, professional, or commercial purposes, for carrying property on its own structure, and for being drawn by a motor vehicle.

Good luck expecting to publish stories and only having people who agree with you to read them. That’s not how it works.
