Locals Organize to Spell Out “IMPEACH” on the Sands of Ocean Beach in San Diego – March 4th

In an upfront effort to replicate the effort by folks up in Ocean Beach of San Francisco to spell out the word “RESIST”, locals are now organizing a similar move here in Ocean Beach, San Diego.

In a definite move to up the ante, San Diegans want to spell out the word “IMPEACH” on the beach just north of the OB Pier on Saturday, March 4th.

The plan is to march up the beach from Dog Beach and in a ‘putting your body where your mouth is’ kind of thing, spell out in hundred foot letters the word “Impeach”. Organizers have a facebook and at last count, nearly a hundred people pledged to participant, with another 550 or so saying they’re interested.

I spoke to Mike James, one of the organizers of the event, this morning by phone. The facebook page and idea, he said, “it’s viral, it’s buzzing.”

How did all this come about, I asked Mike, a well-known and well-liked personage of the village, most recently known for being an auctioneer at the annual town council live auction and as one of the main announces at the OB Holiday Parade.

People saw the action at the other Ocean Beach, he replied, and thought it was real cool. Deanna Polk, one of the other organizers and a former Geriatric Club Girl, saw the Resist, called him and said, ‘Let’s do something like this!’

So, Mike decided to post the facebook page – and was amazed at how many people jumped on it.

Where will you spell out the word?  I asked him. “Just north of the OB Pier, just in front where the Christmas Tree usually goes.”

Did you check the tide?  He did check the tide and it’s low for that day – Saturday, March 4th, and that’s why it starts at 10:00 am.

The people up in San Francisco spelled out “Resist”, but you want to do “Impeach”, I said to him. Why so. “Why,” he answered, “because I thought it was time to look at this … the Russian – Trump connection. I thought ‘Impeach’ was more appropriate.”

On March 4th, Mike continued, “we’ll draw it out in the sand, based on a grid put together on paper.”

He then asked if the OB Rag would like to co-sponsor it – and after conferring with editor Patty Jones, we decided to take James up on his offer.

Mike then reminded me that in 2010, he did something very similar, as he was one of the organizers for “Hands Across the Sand”.

The OB Rag reported in June 2010 on the event:

At least 80 people left the OB Street Fair on Saturday, June 26th, to join the “Hands across the sands” movement. They literally crossed the beach and linked hands with each other at the ocean’s edge to form a human wall against any further off-shore oil drilling.  The line stretched from close to the pier all the way past the lifeguard station.

The OB event was one of over 800 such happenings across the country, and it was coordinated by Mike James.
