Today, we look at what’s new among the businesses along Point Loma Avenue in south Ocean Beach.

The commercial area along Point Loma Avenue is the smallest and shortest business district, and like the other main business streets in OB, it’s a tough, challenging street – as it’s never easy being a small storefront along that one block. And our photo-report of the block is not pretty.
John Baker Frames Closed
One of the most well-known business, John Baker Picture Frames, has definitely closed its doors.
Looks like some kind of packing up is going on inside. It was only in March 2013 that Judi Curry wrote up a very nice business review of John Baker’s frames. Sadly, nearly 4 years after, it’s all over.
New Gym Has Opened
A new gym, called Efficient Working Bodies, has opened its doors.

What Happened to Sunnie’s?
Between three to four months ago, a bright spot opened on Pt Loma Avenue. It was a small Mexican food and coffee shop, called Sunnie’s. Then after a couple of weeks or so, it closed.
And again, Judi Curry came by and wrote up a restaurant review on Sunnie’s – she did have several complaints and stirred up a bunch of commenters pro and con on the restaurant.
On the outside window is a letter to customers saying they were closing only for a couple of weeks to get it together. Here is the letter:
Trouble is, Sunnie’s has been closed for 3 months or so, according to a member of the board of the OB Town Council.
Corner Building Still Empty
Rounding out the block, we found the building right on the corner of Pt. Loma and Ebers Street, still empty. This was the former Rancho’s restaurant and market. A veterans’ group– chased out from the Newport Ave area – tried to set up a bar and space for themselves but was nixed by the local community.

That still infuriates me to no end.
Bars have no place on the same block as a Nursery School.
Blah blah blah. But hey, your side won so all good for you I guess.
And as a result. the space stays empty.
The place stays empty because the Landlord has unreasonable expectations that a tenant should fix serious plumbing issues that are his responsibility.
Which the VFW was going to fix.
It’s turning into a ghost town.
It is ghostly, been that way for a long time now….I wonder who owns all those commercial buildings. Too bad could be so much more than it is.
Perhaps there are three-story mixed-use condominium project(s) in its future.
I had those same thoughts – but where’s the mass transit?
The 35 bus starts and ends its route at Pt. Loma Ave and Sunset Cliffs Blvd, by St. Peters by the Sea.
