NEW UPDATES (as of 5/26/16) – see “The Very Latest ….”

UPDATED: Four San Diego Networks or Groups Planning Protests for May 27th Trump Rally

San Diego is mobilizing against Donald Trump’s appearance later this week, when he stages a rally on Friday at the Convention Center.

At least three four networks or groups are organizing protests outside the Trump rally. One of the 3 has also stated its intention of organizing something inside his event. One of the groups is mobilizing protesters from the LA area as well. And, of course, each network has their own facebook page.

The networks include:

The Love Trumps Hate Solidarity Network

Days before Trump announced his speech in San Diego, the group Activist San Diego, organized a planning meeting at the Joyce Beers Community Center in Hillcrest with a call that went out to San Diego’s social justice community. About two dozen people showed up – including yours truly as a rep of the OB Rag / SD Free Press – and laid the ground work and some basic plans for an expected visit by Donald Trump.

The consensus was that Donald Trump remains one of the most dangerous and unpredictable candidates ever to potentially reach the White House. His racially charged politics, his anti-immigrant rhetoric, his Muslim bashing, and his pandering to billionaire 1%ers, makes him a threat that is worthy of major public mobilization. It is especially important that San Diego with the largest border entry point between the US/Mexico be ready to expose the very real consequences of hate.

The Networks calls for a rally outside the Convention Center starting at noon on Friday, May 27th.

The network adopted a slogan often heard recently and which was thought to represent the loose coalition’s positive approach to combating hate speech, calling itself the Love trumps Hate Solidarity Network. The hope is to mobilize a massive response emphasizing a positive message of grassroots democratic, non-violent opposition.

It has its facebook page up – and at last look, it had more than 50 members, many of them movers and shakers within San Diego’s progressive movement. They include Martha Sullivan of Grassroots Oasis, mayoral candidate Lori Saldana, Mariah Gaylor of the Peace Resource Center and a whole host of other known activists.

The network is holding a meeting to finalize plans – which anyone opposed to Trump is invited to attend :

Meet Mon. May 23rd at the Grassroots Oasis near Old Town ~3130 Moore St. San Diego.

Dump Trump San Diego

Another group that is planning protests on Friday is Dump Trump San Diego. They have a facebook organization page that appears to have been up at least since April, and the group itself is part of a larger network that is organizing protesters to the Convention Center from Los Angeles. Dump Trump SD has organized a couple other events against Trump since early April. Their slogan is “Enough is enough! Time to dump Trump!”

Nearly 500 people “like” the page, but only 42 have signed up for Friday’s protest, and another 56 have stated they’re coming down from LA.

One of this network’s organizing projects is to have folks contact and pressure 15 California Republicans to denounce Trump, with calls and emails – telling tell them they will lose votes unless they do, as all the ones they are targeting are incumbent and up for re-election.

The facebook page’s “About” section has no information about either the San Diego Dump Trump group or the LA one.

Union del Barrio Rally

Another organization that is mobilizing for Friday is the Union del Barrio – which is holding a rally at Chicano Park at 1pm on Friday, May 27th.  Union del Barrio is a long-time militant San Diego Chicano and Mexican-American group that has a base in Barrio Logan. Here is what they state on their facebook page:

¡Alerta! There is an enemy at our doorstep. Donald Trump is planning to hold a rally at the San Diego Convention Center on Friday afternoon, May 27, 2016. Unión del Barrio San Diego issues this call to all anti-racists in San Diego and progressives in general, and to the Mexican community in particular, to stand united and oppose this anti-Arab, anti-Black, anti-Mexican, anti-Woman, power-hungry, neo-fascist oligarch who has every intention of taking for himself the highest political office within the current borders of the United States.

Trump and his trumpista followers are anti-Mexican to their core. This man started his presidential campaign attacking our community, and at every one of his rallies he escalates and expands his message of racist and misogynistic aggression. He has created a political climate in this country that threatens the safety of our communities, and we have no other choice other than to push back against trumpismo! We are planning an organized action in defense of our communities beginning at 1:00 pm at Chicano Park! All of us 100% united against Trump! On May 27th we look forward to struggle alongside compas and allies to defend our communities…

Smash Trump San Diego

The fourth network that is organizing protests at the Trump event on Friday is the Smash Trump San Diego – and they are mobilizing their supporters at 1:30pm in front of the Convention Center. They appear to be the most “militant” in their imagery, rhetoric and photos displayed on their event facebook page  – yet 500 have indicated they are going on the page. The page also states that it is hosted by something called San Diego Antifa Action.

That group’s facebook page states:

This page is for Anti-Fascist / Anti-Racist Activists in San Diego to Unite and Spring into Action Against any Fascism and/or Racism in our Community.

With the recent openness of racism after the Mike Brown killing, and the kkk’s push to recruit in our communities, We need to be ready to Act and Smash their Racist System.

WE EXPOSE active racist, fascist, anti-gay, and anti-woman individuals and groups in San Diego. We won’t allow our enemies to plan their war on us in secret.

WE OPPOSE their events, meetings, fundraising measures, and media outlets. Fascism must be smashed every time it rears its head.

WE CONFRONT nazis, fundamentalist reactionaries, sexists, and all manner of fascists. This is our community and we will defend it from incursion by divisive, violent bigots.

WE EDUCATE our communities and ourselves by spreading a positive anti-racist, pro-queer, pro-woman, pro-migrant youth culture

FASCISTS BEWARE!

The Smash Trump group is calling for protests inside and outside of event, with the slogan “Shut it Down!” and they advocate that people get inside and registering for free tickets.

If there are other groups or networks also organizing for the Friday Trump action, please let us know at obragblog@gmail.com

We also know, according to Doug Porter at SD Free Press :

The San Diego Police Department and the County Sheriff conducted training exercises in preparation for Trump’s appearance outside Qualcomm stadium on Thursday.

Recent events featuring the presumptive GOP nominee in California have led to raucous protests in nearby areas. In recent weeks, Trump’s security team has seen some success in deterring disruptions inside venues where he is speaking, working closely with local law enforcement agencies to identify and turn away people at the points of entry.

Did anyone disrupt the two Bernie rallies? Were there fist fights or people making asses of themselves in the middle of his speeches? A radical socialist came to town, said his piece, agree or disagree and he was left to do so with respect and dignity.

I hope the same courtesy is extended to Trump. I dont always agree with him but agree or disagree, we should extend the same courtesy and respect.

Somebody fired a bullet into his Nevada campaign HQ and ransacked their housing complex. Does that count? Or is the penalty for verbally protesting a presumptive GOP nominee for President of the United States of America who routinely relishes racist and sexist remarks being punched in the face? You see, it wasn’t just that there were fist fights, it’s more to your point to acknowledge who threw the punches.

Racist hate speech that goads others to commit violence is violence.

I don’t think radical socialist means what you think it means. Regardless, when someone is espousing racism, hate, etc. Action is required. It’s not 1920 anymore, we are not afraid to stop it in it’s tracks.

Any ‘handouts’ in particular you’re up for debating? 56 years is a lot of history. Surely, you don’t mean the welfare rolls that Bill Clinton reformed down to their current low ebb, or the world’s currently highest rate and volume of incarceration he legislated, no handouts in there. We know he smoked some grass. And, of course, you’re certainly not referring to the sky high bailouts to Wall St, no strings attached, and no prosecutions. But I’ll just have to guess you’re gonna refuse your Medicare and your Social Security, and while you’re at it, pave the street in front of your house. Just what are you going to make great, Gomer?

Reminds me of the protest and demonstrations in 1968.
Apparently most aren’t old enough and rest don’t remember which party won the 68 election. Have fun being an important and planned part of the Trump organized TV event.

Also most, perhaps you, don’t remember that the 1968 riot was officially called a police riot by the government panel formed to investigate it.

Setting aside Trump’s vitriol, I am impressed that the voters have overcome the will of the party leaders, wealthy donors and superpacs. Trump was voted into this position, (and Bernie has gotten quite far) with the least amount of outside money of any of the candidates. The voters have spoken!

Although I don’t much like what those voters are saying, I respect the process.

Jim, nothing is free. That includes the tax base we all contribute to, and can decide by voting what to fund for the common good, like streets, schools K-12, Medicare, and the payroll tax for Social Security. It’s not free. It’s paid for with our taxes when facts determine that more people rather than less are best served, a notion easily born out when you imagine paving your own neighborhood streets instead of using taxes to serve that obviously common good, that is, unless you think you can do it more cheaply for yourself, and that the same is true for every other individual. And guess what, the same is true of healthcare economics as it is for the dollars and sense of publicly funded streets. Generally speaking, gigantic healthcare risk pools comprising an entire national population can better afford healthcare for all when everyone chips in just a little more in taxes, that way, there’s more than enough healthcare to go around when any of us inevitably gets sick, the giant risk pool of otherwise currently healthy people paying in and not needing payouts can afford to support the rest of us when each us will get sick. It’s not free, it’s just dollars and sense of commonwealth. The same is true of public schools. And as Sanders says, so it could be too for public national university. For a just a little more in taxes, your relatively much, much, greater health insurance premiums and high deductibles vanish, your exorbitant private college tuitions vanish. And as dozens and dozens of countries around the world prove, national public university and healthcare are a win win. And, you can even drive the car to get to them, that you could actually afford with your income not spent on exclusive private profits at the expense of every one else, our commonwealth.
I highly recommend you watch and listen to the interview that Sanders gave to the editorial board of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, wherein he explains, amongst other things, the commonwealth calculation of individual financial benefit national public university: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_P25iloc14o

A little story about what it will cost you to drive that car where all of those things are “Free”.

Gas Prices in Sweden
on April 3, 2012
So I just went to put some gas in the car.
IT HURT!
I put 40.35 liters in there. 15.66 Swedish Kronor per liter is the new exclusive price! It turned out to be 631.88 SEK! A full talk would be 939.6 SEK!
For you lucky Americans, let me do the conversion for you:
If I did a full tank with 60 liters which is 15.85 gallons (not premium gas) I’d have to pay $141.50!!! Did you know that 60% of that is tax $84.90? And that doesn’t include the road tax, the car tax, the mandatory Car Inspection that you must do every year on your vehicle to legally be able to drive it.
Love you Sweden!

Reply

Colin Purdy May 26, 2016 at 4:28 pm

Hmm, well, I wouldn’t be too concerned about a 60% gasoline tax happening in America any time soon. But, more to my point above, Sanders actually does propose a tax on financial trades, a very deep source of potential tax revenue needlessly untapped. It’s not a new idea or radically left, currently implemented in about 28 countries, including Britain where it’s worth 3bil pounds annually, equivalent to 30bil dollars in a U.S. sized economy, according to Robert Reich. “After all, Americans pay sales taxes on all sorts of goods and services yet Wall Street traders pay no sales taxes on the stocks and bonds they buy.” (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/robert-reich/why-isnt-everyone-in-favo_b_9728400.html)

I attended the sunday rally in Vista. As I was leaving the stadium, a teenage boy handed me a flyer that said, Make America Communist Again Vote for Bernie Sanders. I am 54 years old and loudly asked, “When was the US ever communist?” A middle aged woman beside me smiled and said, “That kid looks about sixteen. What does he know.”

I can’t wait to see the mayhem that will ensue on Friday. How long before the “protesters” become thugs and the police are required to step in this time? To those who are protesting have at it, that is your right. To those who act like thugs keep it up your actions do nothing to help your cause. For those who think Trumps speech spreads hate and violence and that justifies your own violent behavior get a clue. That is some juvenile thinking that most people learned to ignore when they were little kids. There is a little saying about “sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me”. If you cannot respect the rights of others to voice opinions you do not agree with or allow the public the opportunity listen for themselves and make their decisions based on what is said then you are an enemy of democracy and and the bill of rights. Respect the process and go in peace.

Colin Purdy May 26, 2016 at 2:22 pm

Please correct me if I am wrong, but I don’t think any of the violence at Trump events has been started or even participated in by protesters. All I’ve seen and heard about, and I admit I’m not fully aware on this count, so please set me right if necessary, is stuff like protesters getting sucker punched by pro-Trump attendees.

Reply

AmericaFirst May 26, 2016 at 3:52 pm

Colin Purdy, the people destroying police cars and public property hitting people in wheelchairs waving the Mexican flag are not Trump supporters. I’m sure a quick google search will help to inform you of the violence that is being committed by protesters. The left’s now-dominant narrative framework is that conservatism = hate, while progressivism = love. This elevates what had been a mere political disagreement to a much higher moral level in which everything left-wing is automatically good and everything non-left-wing is automatically evil. As a result, left-wingers feel free to unleash the most intensely hateful attacks, just so long as they are directed at “hate.” From their vantage point, left-wingers are definitionally incapable of hatred, so when they say “Fuck Trump!” and “Suck my dick!”, those are actually statements of love, defeating hate.
