OB Rag Poll: Majority Supports Police Cameras in OB But Sizable Minority Oppose Them

Ocean Beach is definitely split over the issue of police surveillance cameras being installed along OB’s waterfront in the next few weeks.

The OB Rag ran a poll on the issue – actually two polls – one for OBceans and another for visitors – for a week. In the unscientific survey of our readers, a large majority in each poll favored the cameras.

But sizable minorities oppose the cameras.

In the first poll among OBceans, two-thirds favored the cameras while a third was opposed. With a total of 183 participants, 67.76% or 124 votes said they support them, while 32.24% or 59 votes opposed them.

It was closer in the second poll for visitors to OB. With 86 readers taking part, 59.3% ( 51 votes ) favored the cameras and 40.7% ( 35 votes ) did not.

These polls, as noted, are not scientific.  Readers self-select whether they wish to participate. Only people interested in the issue would take part. And we cannot determine whether someone who takes part in the OBcean poll, for example, is actually from OB or a property or business owner in OB.
Here are the two polls:

The City is prepared to install police surveillance cameras along the waterfront of Ocean Beach. Yes or No – do you as an OB resident, property owner or businessperson support the cameras?

No. – 32.24% ( 59 votes )

Yes. – 67.76% ( 124 votes )

Poll total votes: 183

“only a virtuous people are capable of freedom. As nations become corrupt & vicious, they have more need of masters.” – humm….

redux:
“Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.” – enjoy.

“I wish the Bald Eagle had not been chosen as the representative of our country; he is a bird of bad moral character; like those among men who live by sharping & robbing, he is generally poor, & often very lousy. The turkey is a much more respectable bird.” – dear ben, seems they actually got it right, after all….

The bigger the government the more they will intrude on your life.
The cost of growing government is both money for some and freedom for all.

Check this story out from the UT…nothing in here says put up surveillance cameras

Put a cop on the beat interfacing with the community and get rid of that ugly trailer!

I have many reasons for being opposed to the cameras: privacy issues, no community input, more tools to oppress the homeless, waste of money, etc. But most of all, it is one more thing chipping away at the uniqueness of OB. By all the attention from the media, I think they agree. Please if you care about OB speak up and get involved.
