Someone had to do it.  Someone or something had to step up and take the lead for Ocean Beach in bringing together the villagers on this latest community outrage: the sexual assaults and the peeping tom.

And yes, the OB Woman’s Club did it.  They have organized a community townhall meeting tonight – Wednesday, October 3rd.  The meeting will be at the Woman’s Club at 7pm.  The Club is located at 2160 Bacon Street.

The Woman’s Club put out a colorful flier earlier this week, asking people to attend in order to discuss the recent peeping tom incidents on Saratoga Avenue and the two documented sexual assaults that occurred over a 10 day period back during August.

“The purpose of this meeting,” the flier announces, “is to educate ourselves and to come up with some solutions to these issues.”   The meeting is open to everyone.

One of the organizers said of the event’s facebook page:

Off street parking only, sorry, the OB Woman’s Club does not have its own personal parking lot. Since the Farmer’s Market is also that same day, I would suggest carpooling, riding your bike, skating, or walking over.

Also, organizers say they have created a facebook page to warn and notify OBceans about this issue, called OB Crime Watch.

Apparently, the group stepping up was a response to last week’s OB Town Council meeting which was besieged with people concerned about the assaults and peeper.   Plus, there’s plenty of rumors of other assaults on women going around, but with none to date being verified or documented.

To summarize what has been documented:

  • August 15th sexual assault and groping of woman by bicyclist along San Diego River trail next to Robb Field.
  • August 25th sexual assault along 5000 block of Muir Avenue late at night.
  • Series of peeping tom incidents along Saratoga Avenue, beginning August 15th to September 17th.

So this happened in August and they are still making it a big news story? I just saw a reporter interviewing someone on the street about it. Can’t we focus on some positive things instead of being afraid? Women, don’t walk alone at night please.
