Green Store and OB Rag Sponsored Clean-up of Gateway – Much a weed about nothin’

A dozen community volunteers showed Saturday for the Green Store and OB Rag clean-up of the Gateway Project. We began about 7:45 and went till 10:30 or so.

Weeds, weeds, weeds. We hacked, shoveled, dug, pulled weeds by the hand, raked, sweated … and … we ensured we didn’t take or pull flowers and native plants. But there was a lot of dead stuff, some trash, but a lot of work was needed to make the place less of an eye-sore and more of an inviting place for OBceans.   One guy came by and said he weekly toured the site and picked up trash.

We left a huge pile.  Two city workers showed up at one point and said they would take the pile.  No TV crews showed, no politician showed to take credit. Just OBceans and their friends and hard work in the blazing sun on a beautiful day.

And thanks to everyone.  Thanks to Mindy and DogBeach DogWash for the tools, thanks to Brenda for the tent and water, thanks to Chris, Patty, Colleen, Kip, Mike, Genie, Larry, Hugh, Eric, Pat, and Bob and his dog Bonnie.

Check out our gallery.

A former lawyer and current grassroots activist, I have been editing the Rag since Patty Jones and I launched it in Oct 2007. Way back during the Dinosaurs in 1970, I founded the original Ocean Beach People’s Rag - OB’s famous underground newspaper -, and then later during the early Eighties, published The Whole Damn Pie Shop, a progressive alternative to the Reader.

  1. My fav’rit pitcher is where Frank is with the City guys from the SD Rec. Center, I think one is Ron – Great guy! My take, after speaking with him, later on, was we’re lucky to have him working our parks, though I did hear that earlier he may have given someone in our “vigilante force of urban farmers” a bit of grief over our unannounced “civil disobedience”! LOL
